Jefferson City is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri, and the county seat of Jefferson County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 54,827. The city is located on the confluence of the Hiwassee and Kansas Rivers. It is bordered by St. Louis to the south-west and Independence to the north-east. The first gun lights were placed in Jefferson City by Confederate veteran Captain Wm Hurlbut in 1862 as part of his effort to improve security for Fort Donelson during the American Civil War. These "gun lights" were used as spotlights to make it easier for Confederate troops manning artillery pieces to aim correctly at Union forces approaching from across the river. Gun lights continued to be used throughout World War I until they were supplanted by airplane headlights as primary military signals during World War II. Gun light installations continued into the postwar years but became rarer, being replaced by television or laser pointers in more recent times
