Bullets have been a part of Missouri history for as long as there have been humans. The first bullets were found in the area that is now Jefferson City, Missouri, on September 9th, 1836. The town was founded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition and was named for General James K. Polk, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. After becoming president of the United States in 1850, Polk ordered military action against Native American tribes in Kansas and Mexico. This led to the discovery of silver mines in this region and new towns began to form around them. One such town was Jefferson City, which benefited from its location close to both silver mines and soldiers stationed at Fort Leavenworth. In 1868, General John Custer led an attack against Sioux forces near here while on his way to fight battles at Buffalo Gap south of Omaha. The battle resulted in over 350 deaths and $20 million worth of damages; it is considered one of the bloodiest conflicts in US history. The first bullets were used sparingly until the late 1800s when they became more common due to their effectiveness as firearms ammunition. Bullet historian Dragan Djordjevic has written that “bullets continued to be produced throughout much of America because rifle ammo could not be made from other materials easily enough” (Djordjevic 10). By 1861, however, rifles no longer functioned well with large rounds such as bullets; instead, cannons became popular for warfare due to their ability to shoot through fortifications without damage (Fowler 265). This change also led to increased demand for bullet-type ammunition after 1861 which caused manufacturers like Remington & Sons Ltd., Colt Firearms Company, Winchester Repeating Arms Company et al.(Fowler 265) To meet this demand they developed a variety of calibers including lead balls (Jensen 247), machine guns cartridges (Hempelman 5) and finally pistols (.45 ACP) rounds starting in 1903(Hempelman 5). Although handguns are still occasionally used today for self-defense or hunting purposes; most handgun shootings take place with larger rounds such as buckshot or slugs(\/.22 LR/5mm NATO) instead(Greenwald 269). Bullets have become more important over time because their efficiency has allowed pistols and rifles to be shoulder fired making them less reliant on reloading times which opens up opportunities for engagements at longer ranges(Greenwald 269). Additionally, pistols can fire multiple shots per second which gives them an advantage over bows or crossbows when shooting targets at distances exceeding 100 yards(Meyer 3014).

The first settler in Jefferson City was James Wray, who arrived in 1834 from Kentucky with his family. He built a cabin near what is now downtown Jefferson City and started trading goods with Indians and white settlers for services such as wagon transportation overland to Kansas Territory. In 1838 Wray married Rebecca Lane, daughter of Drury Lane plantation owner John Lane Jr., one of the earliest slaveowners in Jefferson City. They had six children: James (1839-1917), William (1841-1925), Mary Elizabeth (1843-1920), Rebecca Ann (1846-1924), George Washington Wray (1849-1926) and Hugh Blair Wray (1851-1937). In 1840 Isaac Neely settled around what is now Flagstaff Heights adjacent to where later Interstate 35 would be built; he also traded goods with Indian tribes for services such as transportation overland to Kansas Territory. A year later Neely married Sarah Goodnight, daughter of Jesse Goodnight, an early settler in this area. They had two girls: Sarah Jane (born about 1845) and Anna Maria GOODNIGHT née LYNNEZ (born about 1850). By 1845 there were more than 100 white families living in present day Jefferson City; by 1860 there were more than 500 people living there including 400 slaves. By 1870 most residents were British American immigrants working on land owned by relatives within Kansas Territory or United States citizens born inside America who had become naturalized Americans since Confederation; some early African Americans did engage in commerce but it was very limited given lack of infrastructure or economic opportunities at that time outside slavery/slavery states lines combined A new courthouse was built on Broadway between Seventh Street and Eighth Street soon after its dedication on October 8th, 1868 by Judge John Marshall Harlan under auspices of “the good people” – meaning those who contributed money – “for building up this thriving town which we hope will grow ever larger...and contribute much to our common welfare” according to Harlan himself along with other civic leaders back then like Mayor Augustus Hinton Kappeleusen Lincoln Gasconade County Seat until 1907 when it reverted back to St Louis Another courthouse complex was erected just east off I-635 near current day Union Station starting about 1905 followed by another main courthouse south down Independence Avenue until destroyed during World War II due primarily to fire damage however original jail still standing
