In 1943, Jefferson City adopted its present name: "Jefferson City, Mo." The city has seen many changes over its history including growth in commerce due to oil exploration and processing during World War II; increased population growth during earlier years due largely to annexation into other municipalities (East Town being particularly notable); as well as various efforts at revitalization since independence from St Louis County in 1995 through2000s spearheaded by Mayor Tom Dempsey (now a U2 frontman). Today's economy is based largely upon services such as government contracting and business operations within Jackson Heights neighborhoods adjacent to downtown along Fifth Street NW; with some small retail establishments situated within Jackson Heights itself following annexation into downtown in 2009/2010 primarily fordensity purposes (though there are now independent stores scattered throughout both areas).

By 1900, however, Jefferson City had stabilized somewhat and begunto attract attention from developers intent on creating new residential neighborhoods or reviving old commercial districts within its boundaries. However, despite some initial successes (such as developing one of the first municipalsized water systems), by World War II most aspects of downtown were left abandoned as the city experienced rapid growth in suburban development around it. During that time period many important civic landmarks such as the Jeffersons Memorial Library were demolished for redevelopment into housing tracts while other buildings such as the original courthouse were used for storage or other purposes until they too were destroyed in recent decades by demographic changes unrelated to downtown activity or neglect). Today much of downtown is still vacant but there are plans underway to renovate some portions thereof into pedestrians-only areas where public programming can take place without distraction from adjacent development patterns
Jefferson City was founded in 1826 by James K. Polk and became the capital of Missouri in 1837. The city is home to the University of Missouri, as well as several other professional or research institutions.
