A post office called Jackson was established in 1839, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1909. The site of present-day Jackson had been inhabited by Native Americans for hundreds of years before white traders and missionaries arrived in the early 19th century to proselytize for Christianity and trade goods with the native nations. The first European to visit what is now Jackson was Captain James Kipps on his exploration trip through central Missouri on November 10, 1795. He named the village Kipps Landing after himself and his party's leader, Chief Kipps of the Miami Nation (a Mississippian people). After exchanging gifts with local chiefs, Captain James boated upriver to Cairo Township on July 24, 1800 and laid down his claim to what is now eastern Kansas County as part of Treaty 7 which ended Indian Wars between France and Great Britain (the French had acquired territory east of the Mississippi River from Spain). In 1819 an act was passed by Congress providing for a land grant program for American citizens who provide material assistance to our troops during the Mexican–American War (). At that time there were only 2 US Territories: Oregon Territory () and California Territory (). The town developed rapidly due to wagon trains coming through here looking for new places to settle after being forced out of their homes by war or drought conditions back east. By 1836 there were over 100 pioneer families living here; within 5 years they had constructed a log courthouse which still stands today - one of only a few remaining buildings from this period in Jackson history! In 1840 Major Robert Ritchie built an additional blockhouse on Topeka Road just south of present day Union Station & Post Office Square; this became known as Fort Ritchie following his death in 1850 while stationed here helping fortify Wichita Mission against possible attack by Comanche Indians led by Major William Fetterman ().
