Jackson was a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States until the early 1820s. It was located on the bank of the River Saline about four miles (6.4 km) east of the present-day city of Independence and about eight miles (12.7 km) south of modern-day Blue Springs. In 1816, it had a population of only twenty-one people. The first settler in Jackson was John Wilkinson in 1795. He platted what is now Jackson County by landing a boat on the Saline River to look for land grants. The plat included a large area that would become Independence and which is now known as Wilkinson Heights. In 1821, Andrew Wills founded Springfield on an adjacent parcel of land he had bought from Wilkinson two years earlier. Springfield soon became one of the largest settlements in Jackson County and quickly became well known for its commerce and its Manufacturers' School which offered instruction in mechanics, agriculture, carpentry, blacksmithing and other trades subjects to local residents throughout the county. The school closed in 1861 but continued operation as an agricultural society until 1865 when it merged with Rock Island College to form Illinois Wesleyan University in Peoria Illinois
