The town's name came from General David Farragut who upon his arrival in St. Francois County during the Mexican–American War found that "Jackson" was one of several Indian names given to him by American Indians before he could be spared for service under Ulysses S. Grant because he resembled President Andrew Johnson (a personal favorite of Farragut).
