Jackson is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 4,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first people to live in Jackson were the Potawatomi Indians who roamed the area for hunting and fishing grounds before arriving in large numbers about 1812. They left behind numerous villages and towns which thrived until after the American Revolutionary War when many of these sites were destroyed by Native Americans as they were seeking refuge from British forces besieging their village on land they had long claimed as their own. The first permanent settler in what would become Jackson County was James Wilkinson who arrived on July 5, 1795, with his family from Kentucky. Wilkinson named his new land "Jackson Township". He built a log cabin near present day Interstate 70 and donated this site to the county for use as a courthouse square where civil and criminal proceedings could be held. He also laid out roads and named them after himself or other members of his party including brother-in-law Samuel Richardson (1784-1851) who served as sheriff from 1800 to 1809; John Fenton (1792-1870); Jonathan Moulton (1794-1858); Ebenezer Holmes (1800-1862), captain of militia during the Mexican–American War; Colonel George Rogers Clark (1781-1847), commanding general of Indian Territory during its admission into United States under President James K. Polk in 1846; Major General Andrew Jarrard (1784-1860), brigadier general during Indian Wars I & II; Captain Isaac Brockman Jr.(1800-) (the father of future Mayor Joseph P.) Brockman In 1830, Jackson became one of twelve counties within Missouri created by legislative act known as The Organic Laws of Missouri This new legislation aimed to create a more equal society between white males and female citizens while still allowing private enterprise run by whites to thrive without government interference. With these new restrictions placed upon it, Jackson quickly grew prosperous thanks to its fertile soil and good water supply which allowed for extensive agriculture throughout much of its history In addition,Jackson's location made it an ideal spot for military purposes due to its close proximity to fortifications such as Fort Donelson along with nearby settlements like Kansas City
