In addition to its importance as a transportation hub for the region, Jackson also produces crops such as maize, wheat, soybeans, cotton and potatoes. The city was named after Ulysses S. Grant on July 7, 1836 following his victory at Yorktown over George Washington’s army at that location. Grants military career began in 1793 when he served with General James K. Polk’s brigade during the War of 1812 (the “Great American Civil War”). He rose through the ranks until he became lieutenant general in 1850 and then commander-in-chief of all Union forces in Missouri during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). Afterward Grant returned to civilian life and served as member of Congress from Illinois before becoming president nominalof America (1861-1865). He traveled widely throughout North America taking part in innumerable political campaigns and witnessing first hand many aspects of American life including slavery and Reconstruction thereafter. When Lincoln was assassinated on April 14th 1865, Grant took up arms against Confederate forces occupying his home state but was captured four days later at Fort Pillow near Memphis Tennessee by Confederate General Robert E Lee.4 Grant spent several months imprisonment prior to his release on parole in early November 1865 only to be immediately ordered back into combat against General Nathan Bedford Forrest leading what would become known as “The Battle for Chattanooga” which resulted in more than 200 casualties for both sides combined including over 60% dead or wounded men among Grant’s command%. Although greatly outnumbered by Forrest’s 4500 Confederate soldiers under Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Johnston III plus artillery support from 10 miles away at magazine Hill , 5400 Federal troops eventually surrendered after three days of fighting culminating with heavy losses on both sides with about 7000 prisoners taken total along with some cannons captured intact including one that had been previously destroyed by Forrest himself while under Johnston's control!5
