Jackson, Missouri is a town in northern Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1824 by General James K. Polk and his wife Laura Whiteman as a trading post on the Mississippi River. It became a U.S. railway station in 1866 and an agricultural center after the Union Pacific Railroad built a line through the area in 1865. The town was platted on October 15, 1824, by General James K. Polk and his wife Laura Whiteman under the name of Fort Pulaski for their military campaign against Tecumseh's forces during the American Civil War (1861-1865). When Tecumseh retreated from Battle Creek Summit near Stroudsburg on September 20, 1825, General Polk ordered his men to continue their march to Fort Pulaski via Dowlingstown Dam which they accomplished on October 3rd following two days of hard travel through rugged country laden with rocks and deep sinkholes that required wagons to be pushed over them while still moving downstream; they reached Fort Pulaski November 3rd after marching all winter and suffering many casualties from hostile Indians along the way . On February 14th, 1826 Major John Suckling of Company C US Volunteers who had been quartered at Davenport Barracks nearby signed an oath of allegiance to President George Washington that he never forget when called into service for three months or more without leave; this event is commonly referred to as "The Suckling Oath." This act helped laythe groundwork for westward expansion which would bring about slavery into Jackson County; it also began what would eventually become known as "The Great Migration". In 1840 Isaac McCoy donated land east of present day Jackson for religious services and school instruction; this donation is now known as McCoy Chapel. Reverend Elijah Hicks organized an academy there in 1851 which became Jefferson University Preparatory School before switching its name to University Park College in 1907 when it merged with Carver College (now Central Missouri State University) A new courthouse was erected in 1886 by local architect Austin Fenton; it served as both court house and jail until 1924 when it was replaced by the current courthouse building which has been used since 1959 In 1903 Jno Hite opened The Happy Dog Bakery & Cafe immediately across from City Hall where he sold morning coffee until 1978 when he closed shop due to health concerns; later reopened under different ownership but closed again in 2006 A large part of downtown Jackson's commercial district used to be located between Sixth Street NW and Seventh Street NW with much of First National Bank Building still standing today southwest corner between Sixth Street NW and Seventh Streets Northwest
