It is the county seat of St. Francois County and the home of Jackson State University. The town was founded by Isaac Smith in 1825 as a result of the Donation Land Act of 1824 which allowed for American citizens to donate land to be used for public education and resettlement purposes in Native American territory east of the Mississippi River. The town was named after General Andrew Jackson who had been elected president that year and had overseen much of thewestern expansion during his term in office. Founded on April 14, 1865 by Captain George Armstrong Custer during Confederate times as Fort Donelson after Union forces burned down nearby stores and homes; Jackson served as an important military post until it surrendered on April 9, 1865 following Custer's successful charge through Confederate lines near Pea Ridge Mountain near present-day Springfield, Missouri On December 17th 1861 Colonel John Fenton ordered all remaining troops from Jackson to move southward under cover of darkness towards Springfield so that they could join General Sterling Price's army fighting against secessionists in Kentucky A skirmish took place early January 1862 when about 60 men from Fort Donelson were involved in what became known as "the Donelson Massacre" when three Union officers were killed along with eleven enlisted men and one civilian including two children

The Battle of Pea Ridge occurred on November 6th during the American Civil War; it resulted in 36 Confederate fatalities while 9 Union casualties were reported (the higher figure may have been due to battle effects such as loss of blood). In 1865, Confederates burned down all but one building within townsquare block – this could be ascribed to Union General Nathaniel Banks's orders which called for any buildings or stores not used within 24 hours to be destroyed without delay (this order is still cited by many residents today as an early example of censorship). In 1870–71, $1 million worth of Panicano logs were exported from Jackson Valley through Union blockade running operations between New Orleans and Canada; this caused great damage to local businesses and disrupted economic activity throughout much of northwest Missouri for several months thereafter. After passage of the National Defense Act on April 12th 1862 by Abraham Lincoln following the state's secession from America, all military forces within Jackson county must now be under Federal control until ordered otherwise by either president or territorial governor – this meant that all Confederate forces must leave immediately or face martial law powers similar to those exercised by Indian agents during times of war against tribes member
