Jackson, Missouri is a town in the Ozarks region of Missouri. The population was 9,622 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–based city of Springfield. The town was founded in 1836 by John Jackson and his wife Nancy. It name comes from an incident that took place there: when Jackson's father hid some cattle in a local cave, he discovered them when he came back home and found his family eating them. The jackson brothers offered to buy the cattle and so began their business as farmers. In 1870, on land that now makes up much of downtown Jackson, James C. Winchester settled with his wife and six children near what is now known as State Street. Winchester became one of the most influential men in early Jackson County due to his ownership and management of several businesses including a gristmill which provided flour for many schools in the area and also served as an important stop on stagecoach routes between Springfield and Stonington during the mid-19th century. In 1887, Jeptha Hardin organized a group of men who desired to form their own village within what would become Jackson County; they named it "Reno". However, when Reno attempted to build its first house it met with resistance from some residents who felt that such a change would be detrimental to their economic stability; this led to less-than-robust support for hardline factions within Reno throughout its early years even though it eventually achieved municipal status under Hardin's leadership. During World War II, much activity took place around downtown Jackson due to wartime production concerns at nearby Phelps Dodge munitions plants; however, most residents were able to stay away during hostilities although many stores were closed down during the war because food could not beprocured quickly enough following armament production quotas set by US allies Germany and Japan.
