Grant arrived in Independence to surrender it to Robert Eads for safekeeping before its destruction by Confederate troops on January 26th just prior to their departure for Springfield with all its residents and equipment

After years of turmoil, residents were able to build a strong economy based on agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. Today, Independence remains one of the most vibrant cities in central Missouri due to its rich history and modern amenities.
