Independence, Missouri is a city in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 19,519 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Noble County and home to the Gateway Arch National Monument. Independence is a town in Jefferson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. As of the 2010 census, it had a total area of 382 square miles (1,052 km²). It is bordered by Chesterfield on the north and east, Manchester to the south and west, and Pella to the northwest. The first Europeans to encounter this area were French traders in 1672 who named it "New France." The first permanent settlers arrived in 1797 when John Beckwith acquired 3/8 mile (1 km) of land from the Osage Indians. WhenBeckwith's wife died childless in 1799 he married Sarah Morehead; they founded a new settlement called "Morehead Springs" on his farm southeast of present-day Independence. In 1801 an act of Congress designated part of what is now Jefferson County as Jackson Township and gave that name to Beckwith's new townsite. That year also saw one of the earliest school districts established when James Ralston donated land along Buck Creek for a school district which included present-day Independence and parts of today's Chesterfield Township. In 1827 an act entitled "An Act for establishment of roads and bridges within this State," became effective providing for improved transportation within Missouri through state highway systems then under development. This led to Independence becoming known as "The Road Town." Three years later voters approved $500 from businessman Andrew Johnson to erect a covered bridge over Spring River into what is now Chesterfield Township; this marked the opening of what are today Interstate 640 and US Route 67 corridors passing through Independence. In 1832 Union Pacific Railroad constructed its line between St Joseph, MO & Kansas City IL (& Clarendon), MO makingindependence an important center for railroad activity with workshops & passenger services being available until late 2009 when Amtrak discontinued all service except shuttle buses between St Joseph &Kansas City IL thru Clarendon Ampitheater As Kansas City grew rapidly following World War II there was pressure on independence residents to move or sell their homes; however most declined due to economic reasons such as lack of jobs in KC or greater opportunities available elsewhere in Missouri during that time period On October 25th 1946 Missouri passed House Bill No 556 which repealed emergency measures implemented by Governor Francis Onley due to high taxes that were causing serious social unrest throughoutMissouri On November 8th 1946Gov Francis Onley signed Senate Bill No 348 which created Truman National Memorial Park located adjacentto old post office building&old jail buildingin central Independence
