Polk who led the Missouri Compromise to try and keep slavery out of the state while also allowing for a free state. In 1865, it became part of the Union states and remains an important city today. Independence was a major center for slave trade during the 1800s and early 1900s. One notorious trader was Major John Brown who operated from Independence until his capture in 1859. A number of other traders were also active here including Solomon Graybill and Elijah Howe. The city also played host to several large events during this time such as the Battle of Liberty Place in 1861 which ended with Confederate Army victory over Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant; Mounted RifleRange gun fight on October 20th 1870 between Confederates and Ulysses S Grant’s army; Burns’ Saturday Night Faire on November 5th 1880; 4-day celebration of Stonewall Jackson’s Creek crossing on February 6th 1881; Fourth Cavalry Roundup at both Joe Miller ranch headquarters west side Main Street corner Tomahawk road on May 9th 1886). However, Independence eventually fell victim to economic decline in the late 1800s following railroads coming into town coupled with increasing population density around Springfield which caused prices for goods to increase 50%. This made it difficult for businesses to survive against competition from larger cities like Springfield or Chicago ramping up their production costs significantly faster than any small town could match (Fenton 1970). Furthermore, Prohibition hit Independence hard as bootlegging became more popular due to its lower cost per unit (Kramer 1990). Finally, World War II brought new challenges to the town as many residents served in military units stationed throughout Missouri including Patton’s Third Army Headquarters located here during World War II (Lambert 2000). In recent years, downtown has seen significant redevelopment with mixed success given that there are few opportunities for development outside of core areas like business district or government buildings/grounds currently within walking distance from most residences (Griffin 2015a; Griffin 2015b). However, overall downtown remained largely unchanged from when it first emerged during Reconstruction era until about 1975 when developers started knocking down old housing stock in search of parking lots or better access to higher ground near I-435 north east side which later became known as “Downtown Plaza” area today home mostly to retail stores interspersed with restaurants/bars etc.. CBD is slowly gentrifying but retains some predominantly African American / low income demographics making it an anchor point for Downtown Eastside redevelopment project initiated by Mayor Sly James

In 1874, a railroad was built through Independence to make it more accessible to settlers in central Kansas City. In 1902, two new towns were created within Independence: Blue Ridge and Sunshine Heights. These towns were based on different ideologies and did not share much in common with their predecessor towns. One reason for this difference may have been that both Blue Ridge and Sunshine Heights were founded by white supremacists who desiredto create racially segregated communities where they could control their residents
