In 1821, a group of settlers in Independence, Missouri, began to make the purchase of land for a new town. The town was named after George Washington and it was scheduled to be built on the site of an old trading post. However, because of the War of 1812, the town did not come together and was eventually founded on other sites. In 1827, Independence had its first government meeting and William A. Van Dorn became its first mayor. In 1830, John Sibley became the town's first justice of peace. In 1830-1831, there were also several meetings to discuss taxation issues in Independence. On May 15th 1830, a group of men from Independence gathered around a fire and decided to form a company with James Wirt as its captain. On July 3rd 1830, they elected Wirt as their captain and started to build their own fortifications around the fortification they had made around their trading post. In 1834-1835, there were several meetings about forming another township in Jackson County but no action was taken until October 6th when Samuel Tapp voted against incorporation because he felt that it would only benefit Jackson County residents instead of Independence citizens. On November 5th 1840, General Order No 1 was issued by Governor Boggs ordering all towns within his state to become part of his military district known as Missouri Territory which encompassed much of Illinois including parts of Kansas City and Topeka
Independence, Mo., is a city in and the county seat of Clay County, Missouri. The population was 9,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first settlement in what would become Clay County was made on May 10, 1821 by two men, James Waddy and Jeremiah Hamlin. The site chosen for this initial settlement was an area now known as Woodlawn Cemetery. A post office called Independence was established on March 3, 1825, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on July 8, 1858. On January 6, 1861, a group of eleven men from Lawrenceburg decided to form their own town in what would become Clay County due to concerns over lack of proper transportation to central Missouri City. This group named their new town Independence because they wanted it to be "independent from all below" and hoped that this will set it apart from other towns within the newly formed county. The town had its first meeting on February 14th and elected its first officials- a mayor and three trustees- with James Waddy as mayor. In 1865, when Union troops destroyed many of the homes in Lawrenceburg after burning down several businesses during an 1863 raid near town square (now downtown), some residents decided to move away from what they saw as an unsafe community led by Major General Order No 2123 which ordered Stores closed without compensation forishable goods sold therein; these stores were later re-opened under new ownership with no similar problems occurring again until after World War II when rationing took place due to shortages caused by WW2 Pacific theater bombings (See history Of Independence). When Kansas became a state in November 1861 following the US Civil War, parts of Clay County became territory east of Topeka along the Mississippi River including most of present day Clay Township - making independence even more isolated geographically than it already was since only one road connected it directly with any center or outside world knowledge or commerce other than those available through Topeka or Kansas City (See map Of Territory acquired By Kansas). In 1870s there were efforts by people living east of Topeka such as John Fenton To create another town within confines created by fusion between eastern halfofClaycountyandwesternhalfofKansasvillegebutnonewereeverfoundedduetoLackOfPopulationAnd/OrFunding.(See map History Of Topeka And Its surrounds) In 1881 Congress passed act annexing Harrison County westward into Indian Territory creating still more boundaries within existing ClayCounty while also opening up much needed federal land grants throughout Indian Territory resulting In numerous settlements being founded nearby today including Shawnee Heights Estates just south OF I-70 exit & Woodlawn Cemetery just north OF I-435 exit). Independence, Missouri is an American state located in the Midwestern United States. The capital and largest city is Jefferson City, and the population was estimated to be over 12 million in 2017. During the antebellum period, Independence was a part of Missouri. In 1821, after Missouri became a federal state, it gained its own parliament and president. The first census taken in Kansas shows that there were only 4 people living in Independence when it was made a part of that state - all farmers who had migrated from Illinois. On July 16th, 1836, President Andrew Johnson signed into law the Kansas-Nebraska Act which allowed for Nebraska Territory to be formed out of parts of Kansas as well as Iowa and Minnesota Territory. This event led to much conflict between the eastern and western portions of the country about what should happen with these territories. By 1860, however, both Kansas and Nebraska had become states within their respective states - signifying that independence from Missouri would not come until later on in this history! In 1861, Confederate forces invaded Missouri while Union forces were fighting for control of the area around Nashville. Union General Ulysses S Grant advanced southward into Virginia while Confederate General Robert E Lee pursued him through Tennessee towards Mobile Bayou where he hoped to cross overland to invade Arkansas but eventually turned back due to bad weather conditions at Muscle Shoals Dam near Chattanooga TN. In 1865 after several months of fighting during which more than 100 thousand people died or were wounded (one-third of whom were soldiers), General Ulysses S Grant surrendered at Appomattox Court House which ended the Civil War in America! independenceMissouri
