Independence, MO is a city in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 9,912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County. In 1821, the first settlers in what would become Jackson County arrived on a flat piece of land that lay east of present-day Independence and west of what is now Springfield. They named their new town "Jacksonville" in honor of George Washington and James K. Polk, respectively Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President and 44th president of the United States. The town grew rapidly due to its location and became an important stop on stagecoach routes from St Louis to Lawrenceburg (now Kansas City), Topeka (now Wichita), and points south. By 1825, Jacksonville had a courthouse and jail, three churches (Anglican, Methodist Episcopal, Presbyterian) and over 50 residents. In 1830-1831 local surveyor John Thornton laid out 4 square miles (10 km²) around present day Independence as part of his plan for a new township to be established in Jackson County…The plat described the site as consisting chiefly of hilly country lying eastwardly between two arms or hills—the one being high enough to support a small village or town; while on the other side were low rolling hills with several small streams running through them." In 1836 under Chief Justice Elijah Holmes' order there was much excitement when news reached Independence that General Joseph Ewing had been killed during an Indian attack near Springfieldport along I-64 just north of present day Independence. This event gave impetus for construction on what would become known as "Ewing's Bluff" which overlooked I-64 just south of downtown Independence where General Ewing's body was found weeks later after his unit had fought against Native Americans led by Sitting Bull at Battle Creek Bridgesite near Shawnee Mission Junction – this event also helped spur development around what would become known as "Ewingtown". In 1839 Prophet Smith renamed Independence after Thomas Jefferson's Notes on Virginia which he said proclaimed: "No state can be too free nor too independent." This declaration led to social unrest within the growing community as many saw independence as another step away from American traditions such as democracy, individual rights etc.. However over time many people came to see independence not only as an opportunity but also an essential part of America’s history and culture – some even arguing it was more democratic than most European countries they knew! The history of Independence, Missouri goes back to the time when the area was part of the Louisiana Purchase. On July 4, 1803, President James K. Polk announced that the United States would purchase land from Spain in what is now Texas and Mexico. The area became known as Mexican territory because of this purchase. In 1836, Kansas was admitted to the Union as a free state and Independence became its capital. The city's location made it an ideal place for leaders of the Free State Movement to gather and plan their strategy for defense against pro-slavery forces in neighboring Kansas. In 1861, two years before Missouri joined Confederate States of America (CSSA), Independence seceded from Missouri to become a Confederate stronghold. This decision contributed to Missouri's reputation as one of the most lopsidedly pro-Confederate states in the Union army during the Civil War. When slavery was abolished inolorably across all US states by Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st 1870, much media attention centered on Independence and her citizens’ reaction to what must have been an overwhelming news event. Less attention has been given to how this secession impacted Independence itself and its people—the so-called " FREE STATESMEN." Within weeks after emancipation had taken effect throughout all US territories except Nebraska, members of both houses of Congress convened in Philadelphia to consider a bill proposing unconditional pardons for all slaveholders who had surrendered their property within three months after December 15th 1863; any such owners who failed to do so would be liable for $10 per head fine plus imprisonment for up to five years or life imprisonment with hard labor if they did not surrender within that time frame also granted other benefits including exemption from military service etc...
