As part of Kansas Territory in 1870, Independence became one of three Ulysses S. Grant–led cities that seceded from Kansas to form Oklahoma Territory under President Abraham Lincoln (1861- 1865). After Lincoln's death in 1865, General Pershing took over control of Oklahoma Territory and ordered all Indian tribes except those living within their own reservations to leave within 72 hours or be forcibly removed by force if they did not comply. In November 1872, following pressure from Unionists in neighboring Arkansas City who threatened violence if their old neighbor were allowed to remain independent,[1] Independence voted 117-0to become an official Confederate capital under Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest.[2] The City Council soon renamed themselves "The National Black Republic" due to their support for secessionism.[3] After making good on their threats,[4] Forrest burned down most of Independence on November 17th 1872[5][6] leaving only about 50 people remaining inside[7][8], most of whom fled into Mexico or Arkansas City where they continued resistance against Union forces until May 1865 when Union troops finally raidedtownsendpurportedlytargetingAfricanAmericansfor summarily executing them without trial[9][10]. However reports have surfaced suggesting that some African Americans may have actually been transported away alive after being betrayed by local Unionists[11]. Although independence lost much importance after its burning down,[12], it remains an important historical site today with dozens of descendants living there who visit regularly

Independence, Missouri was the capital of the United States of America from 1777 to 1783. It was located on the banks of the Missouri River and became an important railroad center in the 19th century. The city developed into a major educational and industrial center, with two universities and several large factories. In 1806, it became a state capital and remains one today. The city of Independence was named for George Washington's birthplace, Mount Vernon in Virginia. The new town sprang up around a sawmill owned by John Partridge, which had been built by British colonists in 1753 on land that later became part of Missouri. When Washington came overland from Mount Vernon in1775, he found parts of what is now Kansas under Spanish control and decided to try to retake it for the United States. He called out his troops but they were defeated at Battle of Kaskaskia (September 13). Washington then turned his attention to Missouri, where he had already assembled an army for operations against Spain. On November 1, 1777, he announced his intention to become an American president and set off for St. Louis with only 10 men including himself as leader of what would become America's first political party—the "Liberty Boys." In January 1778, General James Wilkinson led a force composed mainly of Native Americans across the river into Indian Territory south of present-day Kansas City so that they could take back some lands that had been surrendered to Spain by Mexico during its war with France. On February 14 Wilkinson's force was ambushed near modern-day Springfield by about 130 French Canadian militiamen commanded by Pierre de L'Enfant who lost 43 killed, 58 wounded and six captured; this event is generally regarded as marking the beginning of World War II in America when American forces invaded Europe without any prior warning or congressional approval
In 1815, the Missouri Territory was organized. The territory was named for the Missouri River, which bisected it. The first steps to becoming a state were made in 1821 when President James K. Polk allocated land to become states within the new territory. In November of that year, General John Brown and his men attacked a U.S military outpost at Harpers Ferry near Independence, killing three soldiers and taking 11 others captive. This event is often cited as the beginning of the American Civil War.
