The area that is now Independence, Missouri was first settled in 1804 by the Backus family. The town was named for Mount Independence, a mountain in present-day Ohio. The original settlers were farmers and their families who laid out a small community on the east bank of the Missouri River. In 1821, a group of men from Kentucky came to Independence to trade goods with the localNative Americans. They founded a trading post and named it Fort Leavenworth. The town grew quickly and by 1830 had a population of over 100 people. In 1838, the United States Congress passed an act designating all of Kansas as part of our country. This made Independence an official U.S. town and caused its growth even greater. In 1861, when Confederate forces invaded Missouri, Independence numbered only around 30 people but quickly became embroiled in war because it lay near Kansas City which Confederate General Joseph Easley thought would be his next target if he succeeded in taking control of that state… In 1862, Union troops under General John Fords advanced into central Missouri and forced Confederate General Robert E Burnside from his position at Corinth Heights outside Springfield. On April 6th 1862, after two days of bloody fighting at Corinth Heights, Union troops stormed into Independence burning everything they foundincluding homes and churches! Bystanders reported seeing “a shower of lead so destructive that it seemed like rain” fall from the sky onto the helpless citizens below before retreating back towards federal lines! From then onforths life in Independence changed forever as stores stopped selling food due to lack of supplies while residents turned to cannibalism in order to survive! Despite this terrible fate however, many residents refused to give up their independence or submit to slavery; they fought hard against their conquerors even though much blood was spilled (the Battle of Corinth Heights is still celebrated each year on April 6th). Many stores reopened afterwards but many more died due mainlyto disease outbreaks brought about by malnutrition and exposure during wartime conditions…. Even today there are few reminders that such terrible times ever happened here; most businesses have been replaced by modern day facilities such as schools and hospitals while downtown remains largely unchanged save for some new construction projects
