Independence is a small town in central Missouri, United States. The population was 1,597 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the "Declaration of Independence" by John Adams and James K. Polk on July 4, 1848. The town was founded in 1827 as a trading post for fur traders on the Clearwater River. It grew rapidly due to its strategic location and rich farmland, and by 1830 it had a population of 2,000 residents. By 1840, Independence had become an agricultural center with over 100 farms and 7000 acres (320 km2) of land cultivated. In 1847, the legislature granted local autonomy and became known as the "Independent Republic of Missouri". In 1870, the state Legislature passed a bill creating a new county named for Kansas City merchant Benjamin Rush; this county formed part of Kansas City County in 1893. The townsite that would later become Independence was settled by French Canadian fur traders in 1827 as they explored what is now Missouri for goldmines. After finding no gold but plenty of silver ore in this area, they abandoned their claims soon after arriving and moved back to Canada. As commerce between Great Britain and North America dwindled during the American Revolution, these men decided to set up shop here instead given its strategic location on the Clearwater River - perfect for shipping goods across the great divide without getting lost or raided by Native Americans or British forces along their way. In 1828 Nicholas Biddle opened his first store in what is now downtown Independence; within five years he had built a larger business into one of the most important stores in Kansas City County. Independence was a small town in the state of Missouri that declared itself an independent republic in 1812. The town grew up around a fortification named Fort Douglas, which was built on the edge of a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. In 1815, General James K. Polk sent military forces to attack and destroy Fort Douglas, but they were successful in repelling the attack. In 1816, Independence began to grow as a result of its new status as an independent republic. Many people from nearby towns Came to live in Independence and help build the fortifications and infrastructure for what would become an independently governed country. In 1840, after many years of growth, Independence became an official U.S. territory when it ratified the Mexican-American War Treaty giving its residents automatic citizenship within the United States should Mexico ever invade Texas again. As part of this treaty, independence votes were held in both Kansas and Missouri so that all citizens had knowledge of their new status before ratifying it. The following year, on November 6th, 1841, Kansas joined Colorado as another Ulysses S Grant Territory when it ratified the Compromise of 1850 which granted slavery unrestricted jurisdiction within free states while protecting their territorial integrity; however, because Missouri did not ratify this treaty until after Kansas’ admission into Confederation (1857), slaveholders there continued to hold sway over slaves inside their own state even though they were now citizens under one roof with equal rights like other Americans. Following World War II and America’s entry into Cold War era with its allies led bythe Soviet Union (and later China), Independence once again found itself at odds with Washington D C over how best to respond to American policies towards Communism instead of trusting our traditional international ally Great Britain which we had been doing since 1775! On July 4th 1948 Independence voted overwhelmingly against joining any “Commonwealth or Federation”of nations due to fears that this would only leadto more division among us rather than cooperation against Communism! This defiance against Washington D C during these tense times helped set our precedent for freedom and democracy today!
