In the early 1800s, Independence, Mo. was a small town of about 10,000 people. It was home to an armory and powder magazine that helped store and fire weapons for the local militia. The magazine also stored ammunition for other businesses in town. The first gun magazine in Independence was built in 1819 by John Mikesell. It was located on High Street at the junction of State and Broadway streets. The original magazine held five guns, each weighing four pounds. In 1825, another gun magazine was built on High Street by James Kettleson. It became known as the “Gunsmith” Magazine because it stored firearms and tools used bysmiths who worked on rifles and pistols. In 1836, the Gunsmith Magazine moved to its current location on Eads Avenue near University Boulevard. The new building had a room large enough to hold 30 firearms with racks space for additionalweapons when necessary. In addition to holding firearms, the Gunsmith Magazine also served as a meeting place for local merchants and farmers who gathered to discuss farming techniques or trade goods with other towns in the area. In 1872, the Gunsmith Magazine changed its name to Springfield Armory after Springfield, Ill., became a city Limits subject to Missouri state law (the first such change since Missouri statehood). The new Arms Manufacturing Company store opened in downtown Springfield on May 4th of that year and soon became one of America’s leading arms dealers supplying equipment and supplies to Union soldiers fighting in the Civil War effort from Illinois through Kansas Territory into Texas Territory (and parts of Mexico). The company continued operations until 1924 when it merged with National Firearms Corporation (NFC) which itself went bankrupt during World War II due mainly to government regulations limiting firearm sales caused by fears of nuclear attack or invasion from abroad; however NFC retained ownership of some assets including Springfield Armory until 1946 when it sold all its assets back to Mike Giannini (founder/owner/director emeritus) who reopened it as American Armament Co.(AAC) under his own management starting February 1st 1947 until his retirement from business June 12th 1991 finally ending AAC's involvement with handguns January 15th 1992 effective immediately following NFA's liquidation decree reducing all private handgun ownership within 5 years).

At that time there were only a few homes and no businesses except for one store which rented space from a farmer on Higgins Creek Rd., north of what is now Main Street). Kansas City grew rapidly around this time and Development along Higgins Creek Road led to increased traffic and conflicts between settlers and other people living within easy walking or driving distance of each other - some who wanted more land but could not get it because it had been given away by those who had bought into early Kansas City development plans; others who built their homes closer to work but found themselves at odds with farmers who had farmed their land for generations despite objections from city planners about how best to use these resources - all without any form of compensation or government support available to them whatsoever! In 1852 an act was passed enabling new towns/cities to beformed in Jackson Township west of I-435 (the same area where KCMSA currently stands) with Independence becoming the first newtown granted charter since that Act's passage seventy years earlier ! This gave residents within easy reach of KCMSA something tangible as well as financial security in terms of having their own town charter - something that has not been forthcoming since then ! Today there are still several small businesses located hereabouts providing jobs local residents can appreciate while also protecting open spaces inside KCMSA...sorta like independence itself ;)
