Independence is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri on the River Ozarks, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of St. Louis and 10 miles (16 kilometers) east of Kansas City. The town was founded in 1833 by fur trappers who named it after their new home in what is now Quebec, Canada. The name may have come from an Indian word meaning "savage." In 1847, James Kapp and his brother John erected a log cabin on land they had purchased just south of present-day Independence Avenue and began trading with Indians and settlers living along the river for goods such as flour, beads, tobacco, cattle and horses. In 1868, when Missouri became a state, Independence became its capital; Kapp's cabin served as the state Capitol until it burned down in 1871. A new capitol was built where he had stored his supplies before it burned down—the first government building ever heated by electricity—and it served as the state Capitol until 1906 whenKansas City replaced Independence as Missouri's capital citing economic reasons only. Holcomb signed a bill making Independence county its own separate jurisdiction. This made it easier for the settlers to get money and supplies needed for their new home.
