The Civil War began on April 12th, 1861 when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina. On April 15th, General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia without any fighting taking place. Three days later, General Ulysses S Grant surrendered at Cold Harbor Junction near Petersburg Peninsula with no fighting taking place. After these events occurred, most people agreed that slavery should be abolished throughout both America and Missouri because it had been a main participant in causing this conflict and had not done anything to help improve life for black Americans living inside slavery’s boundaries. Constitutionally speaking, slaves could only be owned by white men until Reconstruction (1868-1913), which is when African American men were allowed to own property and receive voting rights within certain limits within states like Illinois). In 1836, whenKansas become part ofthe United States, Indian Removal began operation under President Andrew Jackson Order No. 642 which ordered all Native Americans living east of Santa Fe Trail to leave within six months or face execution on pain of death. As many as five hundred people may have been killed in this way before federal agents7 arrived to prevent it from happening permanently! Many Indian families were forced to move westward including those living in what is now Independence because there weren't any other places for them to live outsideofKansas Territory! With so many people moving away from their homes, business opportunities opened up for these early entrepreneurs! In 1861, when Union troops crossed into Kansas Territory from Missouri during the American Civil War, much excitement ensued due to events happening near Fort Leavenworth northeast of Topeka (now Wichita). On July 20th while soldiers were guarding Fort Leavenworth against Confederate attack2 some men saw movement in nearby woods and reported it back to Major General Ulysses S Grant3 who ordered his Army Corps southeastward towards Topeka! On July 24th Union forces reached Topeka where they proceeded to burn down buildings inside Fort Leavenworth before withdrawing back across county lines! The first settlers in Independence, Missouri were the families of William Ferguson and his wife, Nancy. The town was founded on the site of present day Springfield, Illinois on March 21, 1809 by Captain James K. Polk and General David Dixon during the American Revolutionary War. The town was named for George Washington because he had been its namesake as a land grant from the United States government. In 1815, General James K. Polk established an academy in Independence to educate young men for military service in what would become the Mexican-American War. On April 6, 1820, General James K. Polk issued a proclamation declaring Independence Day in all of America and re-establishing Indian reservations throughout central and southwestern Missouri. The townspeople voted to become a state on November 3rd of that year.
