Independence was a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population of Independence peaked at 996 people in 1880 but declined to 725 by 1930. It has since recovered slightly and is now considered a small town with a strong local economy. The history of Independence can be traced back to 1821, when refugees from the Battle of Yorktown arrived in Missouri looking for new homes. They soon found themselves living on the edge of what is now Jackson County, near the confluence of the Kansas River and the Ohio River. These early settlers were not content to live among Native Americans who had already been forced out of their land by war and conquest. So they formed a group called "The Company" and began trading with the Indians. This early commerce helped to form what would become known as the " fur trade belt." In 1829, John Sibley arrived in Independence with his family and began trapping beaver on Little Missouri River. This started an industry that wouldsoon dominate Jackson County's economy. By 1830, Sibley had developed a large business that exported goods all over North America. His enterprise attracted many entrepreneurs and led to growth in both economic importance and population size within Independence itself- from 996 people in 1880 to 750 by 1930! Sibley also played an important role in furthering political independence for Missouri during this time period- he donated land to support a courthouse and jail facility, which served as botha symbol of community pride (and financial stability) while also providing housing for other citizens during times when rural life was difficult.
On July 3, 1820, a group of farmers in Independence petitioned the Missouri Legislature to become a state. The vote was not unanimous, but it passed with only nine dissenting votes. The Constitution of the new state was ratified on August 15th. On November 16th, 1821, the first election for governor took place and James K. Polk won with 54% of the vote (against Jackson’s 46%). Jackson never fully recovered from this defeat and died in office one year later.
