On July 4, 1836, Constitution Day, General Stone’s brigade led by Brigadier General John Custer attacked Fort Scott on Douglas Creek in present-day Kansas—the first time American forces had ever invaded Kansas soil! The attack failed but it demonstrated Clark’s ability as an organizer and leader; he would later be known as “the great general from Independence” because of his role in leading the battle forKansas independence
On July 4, 1861, Missouri became an independent state when the Confederate States of America seceded from the United States. The day after Missouri's secession, President James Buchanan signed a Proclamation stating that all slave states in the Union must free their slaves within 10 years or be placed under military occupation. The proclamation led to violence and chaos throughout the slave states as people descended on cities to demand freedom for their families. On August 16, 1861, Missouri's legislature voted to become a Confederate state with its own government and flag. The decision was met with strong opposition from Unionists who saw it as treasonous. On November 3, 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia after nine months of fighting.
