Hazelwood is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 19,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Hazelwood was platted in 1833 and named for John Hazelwood, an early settler. Hazelwood has a rich history that can be traced back to its founding as a small village located on the bluffs overlooking the river Mississippian near what is now Soulard. In 1833, John Hazelwood organized a group of settlers to purchase 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of present-day Hazelwood from three Frenchmen who had sold it as part of their holdings in what is now Kansas City. The new village grew rapidly and by 1840 had a population of over 100 people and two schools - one school for boys and one for girls - along with several businesses including grist mills and wagon driving services. In 1862, during the American Civil War, General Ulysses S Grant ordered all Union forces within five miles (8 km) of Springfield to move out because Confederate General Robert E Lee was threatening his supply lines running through Springfield into Illinois via this region. Hazelwood, Missouri is a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. The town was founded in 1836 by fur traders and settlers from Canada. Hazelwood became an agricultural center after being platted in 1858. The town's first school was opened in 1861. In 1902, Hazelwood erected its first hotel and post office. In 1912, the town merged with neighboring Parkersburg to form a new city called Hazelwood-Parkersburg. In 1970, Hazelwood consolidated with other towns within Jackson County to form a new city called Shawnee Heights-Hazelwood (now Independence). HazelWOOD has Historic buildings that date back to when it was founded as a small farming community: In 1836, fur traders and settlers from Canada started arriving in what is now Jackson County for the purpose of trading goods with Native Americans. They named their new settlement "Hazel Wood". By 1840 most of the settlers had left for unknown reasons; however some remained behind and began building cabins on land they had purchased from the Native Americans on the banks of Big Creek River near present day Hazelwood Elementary School and Post Office Square (later renamed Town Hall Square). On October 15th 1860 during the American Civil War two companies of Union soldiers under General Ulysses S Grant traveled through Haysville on their way north to action at Perryville outside Springfield Kentucky where they were met by Confederate General Robert E Smith who ordered them all into retreat! This event is sometimes known as "The Battle of Haysville" or simply "The retreat" as more than 20 men were killed including General Grant himself! A few weeks later on November 6th 1860 Captain James Ketchum arrived at Moberly Landing near present day Hatchie Lake with his company of mounted riflemen which he led southward down Big Creek towards civilization until he came across Confederate forces under General John Fenton at White Settlement this time referred to as skirmishing ground between Union & Confederate forces only consisting of 3 militiamen against over 100 mounted Confederate troops! As soon as Captain Ketchum saw his opportunity he galloped forward hand-to-hand combat with about 25 mounted Confederates before escaping undetected back up Big Creek Valley !! After this battle many people migrated out west looking for better opportunities so when Captain James Ketchum returned east in search for land his story quickly gained attention among early settler families who knew about him from hearing stories told around campfires nightly!! When Captains William J Beavers & Richard Wiger explored area aroundpresent day Browns Ferry Rd between Hatchie Lake & White Settlement they found Evidence that gazelles & antelopes had been living there prior to any European contact!!! Today we know that this site likely belonged to Great Plains Antelope herd discovered hereabouts during 1970s field season while searching for Blackfoot cattle rancher Jerry Allard’s lost stock
