Hazelwood, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield-Highland, MO micropolitan area. The community began as a trading post and sawmill on the confluence of the White and Blue rivers in 1837. By 1860, Hazelwood had become an agricultural center with a dozen or so homes and a few stores. In 1865, when Union soldiers marched through town to attack Confederate cavalry troopers living nearby, mobs of men looted and burned all but one store before fleeing into anonymity. The community's growth was slow until about 1880 when it acquired its first schoolhouse and began to build churches and other civic buildings. A fire destroyed most of these in 1902 but again rebuilt quickly with help from subscription drives from local farmers. The population peaked at 2,500 in 1960 but has slowly declined since then due to commuting distance from larger cities and competition from more populous neighbor towns north of Hazelwood on the Missouri River Valley. Today, Hazelwood still retains its traditional rural character with some 350 acres (120 hectares) of corn farming, 300 acres (120 hectares) of hay production, 200 acres (80 hectares) of timber harvesting, 20 acres (10 hectares) of grazing land for cows and sheep, three businesses serving local residents: two grocers/natural food stores; one dentist; one home builder; one car dealership; one dry goods store; four restaurants: two takeout/pizza places; two full service bars; seven convenience stores including five drive-thru operations.; three banks: One large bank with branch locations throughout the community.; three credit unions.: After years of steady decline in its economy due largely to changes within its own community wrought by advances in transportation technologies such as easy access to larger markets outside Hazelwood's borders - paralleling similar declines seen around much smaller towns across central Missouri - it appeared that Hazelwood may be facing extinction on multiple levels if not already extinct were it not for concerted public effort over several decades culminating in recent Measure N development which has resurrected significant economic life for this once struggling communities

Hazelwood, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of north-central Missouri. The population was 1,543 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The earliest known inhabitants of Hazelwood were the Hennepin tribe, who lived in what is now southern Hazelwood and parts of nearby Pella before migrating to Minnesota in the 18th century. In 1837, a group of Mormons from Nauvoo founded what would become Hazelwood after landing on an uninhabited island near present day Jacksonville, Illinois. The Mormons built a stockade and began farming land that they donated to the community. A school was started in 1840 by Rev. John Sutter and Mr. George Gibbs, two men from Pella who had come to help establish Zion Station on Lake Michigan as a stop for travelers heading westward across the continent. In 1845 when Missouri became an American state, Hazelwood became part of Clinton County with 1,500 residents and 10 businesses lured by its central location between Springfield and Topeka on I-435 (now US-133). By 1860 there were over 2,000 people living in Hazelwood with 240 businesses including 26 cotton ginners employed by J C Scanlon & Co., one of six large importers active in Clinton County at that time; most notable for being one of only two companies ever prosecuted criminally under United States Code § 571(a) – transportation monopoly violations – before it was repealed 25 years later The first primary school opened in 1865 as Houston Academy; it closed due to lack of students around 1870 but reopened as Webster School which served grades 7 through 12 until 1984 when it merged into Truman Middle School #2 which serves grades K-12 today In 1886 when light rail service arrived through Topeka on State Route 40 (now US 66), business owners saw an opportunity to capitalize on this new amenity and built a streetcar line running east–west between their properties serving passengers until 1941 Dixie High School opened in 1914 following plans drawn up by local businessmen John Willcox Sr., Wm Matson Jr., Harry Fenton and their families Classes were moved from Webster School onto Elm Street and then south down Elm Street (now Ravenswood Boulevard) during World War I so that more housing could be erected close to both schools while students were away fighting After World War II classes returned back home intermittently until 1949 when all classes were consolidated into Dewey High School which still operates today
Hazelwood is a city in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,552 at the 2010 census. Hazelwood is the county seat of St. Francois County and most of the city is located within Unincorporated Saint Francois County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hazelwood were French traders who landed there in 1763 and named it "Bois d'Hazel Wood". The first settler in present-day Hazelwood was John Halsey who arrived there in 1821 and built a cabin on the banks of the Verdigris River. A post office called "Hazelwood" was established at this location in 1825, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1829, local resident Amos Kendall purchased land east of present-day Hazelwood from David Brinkerhoff for $1,000 dollars cash. He developed what would become known as Kendall Prairie which became an important agricultural region for much of Southeast Missouri during the 1840s and 1850s due to its fertile soil and well-watered climate. In 1857, Major General James Fenton erected a military stockade around present day Hazelwood to prevent squatters from settling there without proper permits from hemlock trees that were then being grown by Native Americans near present day Springfield Township according to historian Charles Wiese; these trees had been cut down by settlers for fire wood years before that date. The townsite was surveyed by Samuel Latham & Associates under license from Fenton on February 22nd, 1858 after five days of mapping work with Thomas Jefferson Dixon as lead surveyor.. On July 15th 1861 Isaac Beall purchased 4 lots adjoining Halsey's plat including lot number 2 which lay just east of current day Broadway Street between Second Avenue (now I-435) and Third Avenue (now US 40). This purchase completed Beall's claim to land that he'd been exploring since January 1st 1861 when he set out from his home on Long Branch Road about four miles northwest ofpresent day Elmira Ferry Landing .. At this time property boundaries varied considerably depending upon where owners platted their homes: many settlers platted their homes adjacent to streams or rivers while others laid out their homes far away from any water source.. As early as 1830 early cartographers had noted hot springs along Verdigris River near modern day Springfield Township but no settlements were established nearby until later when new routes were discovered via travel through eastern Randolph County - one such route led pastpresent day Elmira Ferry Landing .. When surveys began documenting Route 66 corridor development across southeast Missouri late in 2009 it was determined that Beall’s plat included Lots 3 & 4 which formed cornerstones for Highway 66 east/west corridors between Pohlman’s Crossing memorial bridge over Big Beaver Creek south of Pohlman’s Crossing west of Springdale Cemetery - connectingPresent Day Elmira Ferry Landing with Steele City – thus completing Beall’s claim to some northeastern cornerstone along Highway 66 corridor .. In 1863 Liberty Coalfield Railroad developers John Davenport & George Stephenson donated land northeast of present day Elmira Ferry Landing along both sides OF Big Beaver Creek for a railroad spur line.. By 1865 railroads reached all corners ol Southeast Missouri including sections within Unincorporated Saint Francois County... PresentDay Hazelwood was founded when Union Pacific Railway company engineers constructed a depot adjacent to current site on April 27th 1865 .... By 1870 more than fifty residences had been erected throughout town including thirty two churches... One hundred years ago today (April 27th 1865), Union Pacific Railway Company engineers constructed a depot adjacent to present site on April 27th 1865....... Most residents maiden name at this time usually listed as Hardwick or Walcott.... With so many people living here it may have taken weeks or even months for everyone involved with founding/adopting/growing/ maintaining communityto formally meet together.....
