Hazelwood, Missouri is a small town in Crawford County, Missouri. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. Hazelwood is located on the east bank of the Arkansas River and is bordered by the towns of Dunkirk to the north and Westport to the south. The first settler in what became Hazelwood was James Hickey who arrived in 1837. He built a cabin about two miles northeast of present-day Hazelwood on land that he had acquired from John Saylor. Hickey's son, James Fenton Hickey II, also founded Hazelwood. In 1851, David Prentice erected a log cabin near present-day Hazelwood on lands he had bought from Solomon Kimball. The first post office in Crawford County was established at this location in 1857; it was called "Prentice." By 1870, alluvial soil had deposited over several feet along both banks of the Arkansas River making transportation difficult and swampy areas were common. In 1865, John Tipton organized a wagon road connecting Carbondale and Springfield with his idea that this would improve trade between these two cities and bring more people into town for economic development purposes which would create new jobs and commerce. This wagon road led from Carbondale downriver until it reached present day Dunkirk where it turned northwest and continued through present day Westport before coming to an end nearpresent-day Hazelwood. The first school buildings were built at or near today's intersection of Highways 24A (west) and 256 (east). School district No. 1 opened its doors on October 15th, 1876 when Mrs Henderson donated four pieces of lumber to be used as building material for her daughter's school project which she named Mount Zion Female Seminary; however no buildings were ever erected except for one classroom which served as heating fuel until 1978 when an addition was made to house science equipment during renovation work at neighboring Higgins Elementary School #2. In 1895 Mrs Henderson donated three additional pieces of lumber which were used to build her fourth school building – now known as Webster Elementary School #1 – adjacent to Mount Zion Female Seminary; but again no classrooms or facilities were ever constructed except for one classroom which served as heating fuel until 1981 when an addition was made to house science equipment during renovation work at neighboring Higgins Elementary School #2 . On February 14th 1915 local resident Lillie Crouse set off fireworks across US 26 just west of town limits creating quite a stir among locals who always enjoyed watching firework displays from their homes! One year later On July 4th 1916 local resident Averill Beardslee set off fireworks across US 26 just west of town limits creating quite a stir among locals who always enjoyed watching firework displays from their homes! One year later on January 3rd 1919 local resident Clarence Perkins set off fireworks across US 26 just west of town limits creating quite a stir among locals who always enjoyed watching firework displays from their homes! All told there have been over 100 events reported involving residents within 0 miles of today's community!! Hazelwoods unique geography has resulted in many interesting items being found throughout its history such as: rock candy discovered while digging through old construction rubble after demolishing some residences back in the 1990s; well headstones dating back over 300 years discovered while conducting archaeological research nearby during restoration works for nearby Higgins Elementary School #2; pioneer saddles recovered while conducting environmental research along I-635 eastbound just outside town limits recent findings including bullet casings/nails/flintknives dating back over 350 years!!!

Hazelwood is a small town in Ray County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,349 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was organized on December 12, 1837, by citizens of several other towns in the area surrounding Springfield. The name "Hazelwood" was given to the community by Captain John Hazelwood and his family who settled there in 1838. The first post office was established in Hazelwood on January 6, 1840. In 1848, settlers from Lebanon arrived in what is now Hazelwood and began trading goods with local farmers. By 1870, most of the residents of the community had moved to Springfield or other nearby cities because of economic opportunities available there. In 1881, a store and blacksmith shop were built near present day University Avenue and Old Highway 61; this became known as "The Brick Store". In 1907, a school was built west of present day Union Boulevard; it became known as "Hazelwood High School". During World War I (1914-18), Hazelwood served as an airbase for Ulysses S. Grant's army during its campaign through Missouri. After the war ended, many businesses closed due to lack of customers or competition from larger communities within miles of Springfield. However, some new businesses opened up such as a grocery store and barbershop in 1923 which remained open until 2003 when it went out of business due to changing market conditions affecting small towns across America like that one-. A post office called "HazelWOOD" was established at Hazelwood on July 3rd 1850 by Elisha Willard Gibbs with P O Box 9609 presumely because he could not find a better place to put his mail box than where he lived himself! There have been many changes over time to how this small town functions today but one thing has stayed constant thruout all these years - Our Local Community spirit!
