The first European settler in what is now Hazelwood was John Armstrong who came to this area in 1835. He built a cabin on the east side of the river and called it "Armstrong's Landing." The settlement grew slowly until 1849 when John Neely moved from St. Louis to buy land in Union County and founded Hazelwood. Neely created a post office at his cabin and named it after himself, Hazelwood (a word meaning "hazelnut"). A kindergarten was opened in Hazelwood in 1902 and the first public school opened in 1903. In 1910, Hazelwood became part of the city of St Joseph which merged with Jefferson City into the Kansas City metropolitan area. With its growing population, Hazelwood began to develop infrastructure such as roads, sewers, schools and churches. By 1920 there were six businesses open for business within three blocks of each other in downtown Hazel wood including two banks and two grocery stores. In 1925, an ice cream parlor became one of only two commercial enterprises operating within five miles of downtown St Joseph In recent years growth rates have slowed slightly due to high unemployment rates in surrounding communities such as Independence MO . However community leaders are committed to redevelopment efforts that will occur over time if job opportunities remain available

The Johnson brothers turned Hazelwood into one of the most powerful industrial cities in America. By 1900, Hazelwood had a population of over 100,000 people and it was considered one of the great "gilded age" cities in America.
