Morgan purchased the mill rights from Denton's heirs and continued production under his own name until 1886 when he merged with two other mills to form the Missouri River Mills Company which continued to produce flour until 1912 when it merged into Rayon Corporation. Hazelwood experienced significant growth during World War II due to its proximity to military bases such as Fort George Gillem and Wright Field; however, much of this growth came after war hostilities had ended and commercial development began anew in postwar Hazelwood; although some industry did continue through the late 1960s into 1970s including manufacturing of Bakelite plastic (originally produced at nearby Decatur Auto Parts).

The town was founded about 1836 by fur traders as a stop on their way to Pella, Illinois. The first settlers were refugees from the Trail of Tears who arrived in large numbers during the 1840s and 1850s. In 1856, they voted to become a city and named it for John Hazelwood, an early settler and judge in nearby Jacksonville. Hazelwood experienced rapid growth following World War II when automobiles became popular and people traveled there for jobs in defense plants or government agencies. After years of steady progress, however, the economy crashed in the late 1990s and 2000s while crime rates rose dramatically; Hazelwood lost many residents to other areas over that period. In recent years, efforts have been made to revitalize downtown with new businesses and restaurants; however, much remains undone despite significant investment from local businesses and developers since 2005. According to 2014 census figures,[2] Hazelwood has a total population of 9,911 people (7% black or African American), 8% Native American/Alaska Native (4% descendant of Alaska Natives), 20% white (non-Hispanic), 60% foreign born residents (5% from outside countries). Hispanic or Latino residents make up 7%.
