Hazelwood was a small town in Boone County, Missouri, United States at the time of the American Civil War. It was burned by Union forces on July 18, 1861. At its peak, Hazelwood had a population of about 350 people. The town began as a Methodist settlement in 1826 and grew to include a Baptist church and other religious institutions. The first store opened in 1830. In 1846 the town's main school was built and it continued to serve as the primary educational institution for the community until it closed in 1938. The town lost most of its economic significance with the decline of farming around Hazelwood after World War II. However, some businesses remain active such as an auto dealership and gas station. In recent years, there has been development along Highway 50 which provides new residents with access to education and entertainment options
Hazelwood was founded in 1836 by John Wesley Hazelwood and his wife Sarah. The town is named after a hickory tree that stands near the original town site. The first settler in Hazelwood was John Lemberg, who arrived in 1836. In 1840, Esther Beech bought land in Hazelwood from the government for $1 per acre. In 1840, there were only 20 people living in Hazelwood when it was founded. By 1847, the population had grown to 100 and by 1850, it had reached 150. The first school in Hazelwood was built by Mr. Mclntyre in 1846. A second school was built in 1860 and replaced an earlier school that burned down in 1858. Mrs. Purdy donated money for a third school which was built on State Route B around 1900-1901 and still uses this name today (it has been renamed to Stroudsburg School District #2). In 1865, local doctor Drury opened a hospital on Main Street which served as the town's first clinic until 1906 when it became a dispensary. In 1870, Drury moved his practice to what is now called the Old Central Market building on I-565 west of town limits where he continued to practice until his death in 1923; he also owned several businesses within town limits including one store and two blacksmiths shops. In 1901, Drury's son-in-law Wm Haggerty purchased both buildings at 521 main street from Drury's widow for $3/acre which later became known as "Drury Hall". From 1901 until his death in 1925, Wm Haggerty ran HazelWOOD hardware store which later became known as "HazelWOOD Store". In 1907, the United States acquired Mexico through Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and henceforth all Mexican citizens were required to have citizenship cards before they could live or work within U S borders! Consequently many Mexicans decided to move back into their home country rather than continue residing within US borders because they didn't want their residency rights revoked should they ever be deported back home again! As a result of this change many people left their homes behind and started moving into other towns throughout Missouri due north of where Hazelwood currently sits... such as Clay City (now part of Kansas City), Kirksville (now part of Wichita), Pacific Grove (now part of Springfield) etc.. However even though most residents relocated away from Hazelwoods original boundaries some people did stay - such as Mr./Mrs.(unclear if married name) who kept property along State Route K south of town limits until 1951 when their property reverted back under state control
