One hundred years later, on July 1, 2018, HazelWOODCity became a city when it adopted an ordinance declaring itself a city pursuant to St. Louis Municipal Code § 5-101(a). The history of HazelWOOD City can be traced back to 1837 when James W. Hazelwood purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land from David Heiman near present day Dixonville for $5 per acre ($161 per kilometer). By 1830, several small villages had sprung up around Dixonville due to new wagon roads being constructed throughout the region by fur trappers and traders seeking access to rich resources such as coal and timber available in this area. When Captain John Smith discovered large amounts of coal and other minerals while exploring Missouri Territory in 1827 he immediately began construction on a road leading eastward from his previous discovery just north of Dixonville along what would become Highway 6 today. Thisroad would eventually lead all the way to Saint Louis where it opened up new opportunities for commerce and agriculture which helped contribute greatly to St Louis' growth during that period; including becoming one of America's most important cities with over 300 residents by 1840! Eventually landing lots hereabouts allowed entrepreneurs like George Catlett & Sons who started out importing goods directly from Europe via boatloads downriver at Cahokia Landing developed into some really big players hereabouts; Warehousemen Catlett called them because they managed warehouses not unlike those common today located downtown near busy streets – storage spaces wherein items such as flour powder etc., were unloaded onto bargesTFRV’s or “trucks” ferrying them acrossriver towards marketplaces where customers bought these goods! The Warehousemen also built sawmills which produced lumber primarily for local use but occasionally exported boards/furniture etc.. The community quickly boomed with numerous businesses developing rapidly thanks largely to its location close to major transportation arteries that permitted easy accessibility both hither & yon!! By 1860 there were 4 churches operating: 2 Catholic (St Joseph’s Parish & Our Lady Of Lourdes Parish), 1 Protestant (First Presbyterian Church), 1 Methodist (Methodist Episcopal Church),1 Baptist (National Baptist Convention) – making it quite an active religious community then!!
