The town was named after a hazelnut tree that grew near their farmhouse. In 1868, Augustus Hazelwood donated land to build an elementary school and high school in the town. The first high school building was destroyed by fire in 1922 but it was rebuilt and opened for students in 1923. The current high school building was built in 1951 and is used as a library.. The towns main industries have been farming until the late 1800s when they began to manufacturing items such as saddles, shoes and other items for local farmers. It was named after the hazelnut tree that growed near their home. The first post office in Hazelwood was established in 1839. The town became an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1840s. In 1865, Hazelwood was incorporated as a city and has since grown to become one of the most vibrant communities in central Missouri. The town's history can be traced back to its earliest days. Ishmael Hazelwood and Hannah were both born in 1796 and they arrived in what is now Hazelwood in 1836. They soon set about building a home along with four other families who had also moved there from nearby towns such as Lenoir County and Shawnee County. By 1838, the Hazelwoods had acquired over 100 acres of land for their new community which would eventually include 10 buildings, including a school, churches, stores, and homes. During this early period of development, it is likely that much of what we know about Hazelwood comes from local residents themselves or from archives preserved at local museums like Central Methodist Church which still operates today. One particular source of information that has been used to help illuminate our town's past comes from construction records kept by local builder John Cavanaugh who built many iconic structures throughout central Missouri during this time period such as the old Hannibal Lumber Company Building which still stands today within walking distance of virtually every household within Hazleton proper! In 1865, due to increased population growth within central Missouri (due largely to railroads),HAZELWOOD INCorporated became an official city governed under a charter granted by Governor James Kiefer on May 1st 1865- thus marking not only its incorporation into another government but also beginning what would become an era of major progress for the small community; starting with rapid expansion into new neighborhoods as well as establishment of several parks (including one now known as Pioneer Park) across townline making it easier for citizens to get around without getting lost amongst all these institutions!
