According to tradition, hazelnuts were first planted in what is now Hazelwood by certain pioneer settlers in 1839-40 as part of their efforts to improve farm productivity following years of hard work on land that would now be covered with forests thanks to logging operations conducted by Abraham Lincoln's Ulysses S Grant administration.[2] As early as 1840 there were hazelnut trees growing on property near present day Hazelwood Elementary School;[3] however it wasn't until 1851 when a rich vein of coal was discovered adjacent topresent day Hazleton Road that development really got going around hereabouts - not only did businesses start popping up all over town due to increased demand from miners/ businessman looking for new resources but also schools (read: HazelWOOD Elementary) started forming up around this time too! Which means not only did we have our own version of Main Street back then but we also had pretty good ol' boy politics involved too! With all these new arrivals coming into town things didn't stay still long though...businesses quickly started booming & progress just kept going from there! So much so that even today some folks feel like things might've done better if those days hadn't coincided with such tough times politically (& economically speaking) back then…eh? But whatever – life goes on & everyone makes mistakes sometimes 🙂
