Hazelwood is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,584 at the 2010 census. Hazelwood was founded in 1836 by John and Nellie McGee. It became an incorporated village in 1902. The community ceased to exist as a municipality when it merged with neighbouring communities of Grafton and Bellefontaine on July 1, 2006. The first inhabitants of what is now Hazelwood were French Canadians who arrived from Quebec during the 17th century. They built churches and cabins along the riverbank near present-day Hazelwood Elementary School. By 1836, theMcGee family had moved from Quebec to what is now Hazelwood after purchasing land east of Bellefontaine for $8 per acre (2 km²). Settlers began building outlying farms around what would become Hazelwood while they awaited news of a railway line connecting St. Francois County with Hannibal, Illinois via Springfield; this hope never materialized however the railroad did bring trade and new settlers into the region which helped spur development aroundpresent-day Hazelwood where farmers erected stores and homes until 1901 when prohibition made alcohol illegal in Missouri,. In 1902, due to its proximity to Hannibal, Springfield & Carthage Railroad Company's newly proposed line between those cities - known then as "the road that never was" - Grafton (to the south) merged with HazelWOOD on July 1st 1906 becoming one entity with a combined population of 2,640 residents making it one of area's largest municipalities prior to its merger into Bellefontaine Township on November 3rd 2007 having 4square miles (10 km²) compared to current 7 square miles (.25 km²) or less than half its original size! Bellefontaine Township officially adopted its name - "Hazelwood Township" - on November 3rd 2007 after years of discussion surrounding whether or not it should be changed since so many people continuously refer to their community as simply "HazelWOOD". The township covers an area just over 5 square miles (.25 km²), making it slightly smaller than Belleville but larger than Grafton which only has 2 square miles (.25 km²). In spite of all this growth there are still pockets throughout our township that feel like they have been left behind economically & socially due mainly to deplorable infrastructure including a lack of schools within walking distance for most citizens and aging bridges that can no longer support heavy traffic!. This paper will focus primarily upon specific aspects associated with history & culture in regards to Hazel wood such as: establishment/foundation story; early years; changing demographics; post- merge period; current environment
