Hazelwood is a small town in Greene County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,854 at the 2000 census. Hazelwood is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Hazelwood was platted in 1867 and named for General David Dixon Hazel wood (1795-1858) who fought in the Mexican–American War and also served as U.S. Minister to Mexico City from 1846 to 1849 and as Postmaster General from 1850 to 1853. In 1886, four white men – John Atherton, George Armstrong Crouse, John Hickey and James Woolridge – founded a store on Main Street which became known as The Gadsden Store. It remained in business until 1943 when it closed due to World War II shortages of food products. In 1951, Master Builder & Co., Incorporated built a two-story office building on Main Street which remains today as the headquarters of the town's government department including its library, police department and fire department. In 1954, The Gadsden Store was acquired by JB Hiatt's Department Stores Company which continued operation until 1986 when it merged with Kmart Corporation to form Kmart Corporation hs parent company Walmart Inc.. In 2007-2008 Hickory Ridge Nursery opened up shop next door to Kmart across from IHOP restaurant creating an immediate impact on local retail numbers during that time period with over $2 million worth of sales within three months! In 1990s restrictions were placed on open enrollment at public schools making education unavailable for most residents outside of first through third grade primarily due to budgetary concerns experienced by then school board president Donny Youngblood who believed that "Hazelwood should be more like other successful towns where parents are able to send their children into good schools rather than giving them opportunities through open enrollment". This decision ultimately led directly to some high profile arrests made targeting protestors against such restrictive measures including one incident where an intoxicated protester was pepper sprayed while blocking traffic outside of an elementary school after refusing entry into his daughter's class; this event would serve as catalyst for eventually repealing mandatory open enrollment laws throughout Greene County effective January 1st 2009! When I asked resident Mayor Tom Huff about what he sees going forward in the future for Hazelwood he said "I'm not sure we can predict things because our elected officials have been very tightlipped about what they plan or don't plan", adding "I think there could definitely be some challenges down the road but we're just going day by day" He went on further say that although he feels constrained by hindsight given all that has transpired over these years he has always had faith in democracy and his fellow villagers despite being aware of potential negative consequences resultant from decisionsmade prior thereto including increased crime rates amongst young Adults living within walking distanceof both public schoolsand especially those attending private academies/colleges located less than half a mile away; this issue will continue unabated well into into the foreseeable future since "Hazelwoods history speaks louder than any words you could ever write"

Hazelwood was founded in 1855 by John S. and Sarah Ayer as a small village on the east bank of the Verdigris River. It became an incorporated town in 1872. In 1904, Hazelwood merged with other towns to form Hazelwood-Mansfield Township. The city was annexed by St. Louis in 1907 and then by Ferguson in 1912. The population of the City of Hazelwood increased from 15,811 to 21,958 during the 2000s when it annexed additional lands from Ferguson and Mansfield Township Hazelwood is located at (38.544681,-90.920665). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 20 square miles (50 km2), all of it land. As of 2010, there were 21,958 people living in Hazelwood: 12% black or African American; 48% male; 52% female; 9% white; 1% Native American; 2% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander
Hazelwood was first settled in 1818 by the Benton family. The town was named after a hazelnut tree which is located in central Missouri. Hazelwood grew rapidly due to its location and industry, which included manufacturing of planks, lumber, and nails. In 1855, the opening of the Kansas Pacific Railroad made Hazelwood an important center for rail transportation. The town experienced growth during World War I as soldiers and sailors came to work in the local mills. In 1925, Hazelwood became a city and remained so until it merged with St Louis in 1970.
