The first settlers to what would become Hazelwood were farmers who arrived from Kentucky around 1871. By 1907, when it was incorporated as a city, there were only a few hundred residents living in Hazelwood proper while 5 or 6 other towns served by Highway 59 extended into present-day Scott County. The village had a school, church, jail and fire department until it closed its doors in 1944 after being overwhelmed by population growth within city limits of Kansas City. In 1957, Hazelwood built its first high school for girls which still operates today as Holly Springs High School; it also has a football team that currently competes in the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVC).
