Hazelwood is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,826 at the 2010 census. Hazelwood is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. It was named for General John Fenton Hazelwood, who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as U.S.-Mexico's representative to the peace negotiations at Sand Creek Massacre in 1864. The area that now makes up Hazelwood was first settled by German immigrants in the early 1800s. In 1849, a group of settlers from Illinois founded a community here called Prairie du Chien on a bluff overlooking the river Rouge. The name was changed to Hazelwood on account of its remote location and lack of water supplies. In 1870, when Union soldiers burned down Prairie du Chien and destroyed all evidence of its prior existence, some settlers began to move into what is now Hazelwood. By 1875, there were about 20 people living in what is today Hazelwood; 10 were farmers and 10 were merchants or traders who rented space from the farmers for storage purposes or used it as their home base while they moved around looking for landholdings elsewhere. In 1881, one settler named Paul Bunyan erected a log cabin near present-day Elmira Road and Maple Drive; he continued to live there until his death in 1921. The first post office operated here on February 17th, 1881; it was renamed Junction City after nearby Clearwater Junction (nowKansas City). The first school opened in this community on October 15th, 1888; it became known as "Hazel wood Female Academy" after being purchased by Mrs.(?)(?) Hodge from Indian School #1 (now Independence) near Kansas City proper during an agricultural fair held at Park Hill Agricultural Institute west of town that year. Mrs.(?)(?)
