The Gadsden Purchase of land north of St. Louis in 1819 led to the growth of Hazelwood and other towns in Jackson County during the late 19th century into what is now known as Midwest City and Hazelwood proper. Hazelwood was founded in 1827 by Nicholas Brown and named for Captain James Aiken's daughter, who had been born at Molloy Point on the Mississippi River opposite Prairie du Chien (now Waukesha). The first school closed in 1840 due to lack of pupils; but a new school was built on Main Street in 1847 with funds from local farmers and merchants, including John Aiken Sr., father of Captian James Aiken who later became a United States Senator from Arkansas. In 1860, when voting rights were granted to African Americans withinJackson County through an act passed by the General Assembly, Hazelwood's white citizens boycotted elections because they did not believe that African Americans could be trusted with important civic responsibilities such as voting. However, black political leaders quickly took control of local government and education until after Reconstruction ended in 1865 when most blacks were removed from public life across America following passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution which outlawed slavery throughout America. In 1904-5 Henry Ford began production on his first car at his Ford Motor Company manufacturing plant located adjacent to present day Main Street near where he currently resides with his family today as well as many other significant locals like Roy Rogers and Dale Earnhardt Jr.. After World War II American manufacturers shifted their production eastward towards bigger plants away from cities like Detroit creating a loss for small towns dependent upon high volume factory jobs which gradually declined throughout 20th century America despite efforts by some mayors like Phil Anschutz to revive them during this time period while others just lookedthe other way or simply abandoned them altogether citing economic reasons such as increased competition from overseas manufacturing etc... although recent redevelopment has brought back some old industrial buildings along with commercial properties facing downtown/downtown mixed use development plans are keeping Hazelwood alive despite its declining economy over recent years however all eyes will once again be turned towards Main Street this coming year for possibly its biggest event yet - it will be Homecoming Weekend!

After the war ended, many of the original settlers returned to Hazelwood and started new businesses such as a grocery store and coal mine. In 1929, Hazelwood had a population of 514; by 2006 it had only 301 residents remaining
