The gun was made by a man named John W. Herrin and it used a .44 caliber cartridge. In 1853, another man named Jesse Henson started manufacturing nails and other hardware in Hazelwood. His products were sold under the name Herrin Hardware. By 1870, there were two businesses in Hazelwood that manufactured firearms: Herrin Gun Works and John Worthy Gun Works. The town of Hazelwood grew rapidly from its small population of around 100 people in 1871 to over 1,500 people by 1890. One of the most famous handguns manufactured in Hazelwood was the Colt revolver. This gun was created by Nicholas Colt and it was first made available for purchase in 1873. The revolver impressed many people because it used a 6-shot magazine that allowed users to fire many rounds at once. It also had an easy draw handle that made it easy to use. In 1907, Colt announced that they would be selling their entire line of revolvers called “Colt pistols” to dealers across America (except for Canada). These pistols would be chambered for both 5 and 7 cartridges and they would have a hammerlock system instead of a traditional safety mechanism (which makes them much easier to operate). By 1914, almost every city in America had at least one Colt pistol dealer! Another famous handgun manufactured in Hazelwood is the Smith & Wesson revolver (known as the “Big Boy”). This weapon was designed by John Skelton and it was first released for purchase in 1903. The Big Boy became popular because it could shoot multiple rounds per minute with its 10 round magazine and its double-action system gave users great accuracy (although some users found its recoil difficult to control). It is interesting to note that even though this weapon is often considered one of the best handguns ever produced, few people actually own them today!

The first school was built in 1886 and soon enough there were several churches and businesses in Hazelwood including a sawmill which manufactured lumber for homes and businesses around the region. In 1907–08 an electric power company was formed with money from investors including J P Morgan which would later become Enron In 1916 an incident took place that would forever change Hazelwood's history; local farmer Harry Hutzler set fire to his cotton crop while protesting low prices at the Nashville market due to World War I restrictions on exports of foodstuff such as cottonseed oil HazelWOOD residents elected their first female mayor Mrs Gertrude Bourgeois in 1924 After years of development growth stopped until 1972 when Interstate 70 bypassed town limits creating what is now known as "the new side" of town with much more retail space along Main Street than before In 1984 racism against African Americans began creeping into Hazelwood where they were commonly treated as second class citizens without any real rights or recourse available to them other than working extra jobs minimum wage

The first permanent settler in Hazelwood was Solomon Phelps Dodge and his family who arrived in 1837. The town was named after John Fenton Hazelwood, an American entrepreneur who had a plantation near Richmond, Virginia. In 1854, the town became the seat of Clay County when it was created from parts of Webster and Washington counties. In 1865, it incorporated as a city and remained so until 1993 when it merged with Springfield to form theMicropolitan Statistical Area known today as Springfield-Springfield-Hazelwood. Hazelwood is located at (38.823752,-91.947924). According to the 2010 census, its total area is 34 square miles (86 km²). It has a total population density of 2 people per square mile (1 person per km²). The racial makeup of Hazelwood is 98% White; 0% African American; <1% Native American; and 1% Asian Pacific Islander
Hazelwood was founded in 1871 by Captain John D. Hazelwood and his wife, Jane. The city is named for the huckleberry bushes that are found near where it was founded. It grew rapidly throughout the 19th century, thanks to its location on the banks of the Missouri River and its access to timber and fur trade. By 1907, Hazelwood had a population of over 100,000 people. In 1916, Hazelwood became an independent city and adopted a new name: St. Louis County (renamed as Missouri City in 1920).
