Hazelwood is a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,845 at the 2000 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first Europeans to come to what is now Hazelwood were French explorers and fur traders in the early 1700s. They named it "Aiglemont" after an ancient French settlement in Canada. The first settler in what is now Hazelwood was John Aiken who arrived around 1800. He built a cabin on the north side of present-day Springdale Road. Aiken's cabin still stands today and can be seen from Interstate 255 near Hazelwood Elementary School. In 1824, Captain James Kiefer explored and charted the Arkansas River Valley and discovered what would become Hazelwood when he crossed it on his way from St. Louis to Little Rock. Kiefer named his new post "Hazelwood" for his old home town of Aiglemont, France; he had been appointed lieutenant colonel of militia there by President James Ketchum as part of the westward expansion program known as the Kansas–Nebraska Act of 1854 (see also American Civil War). Hazelwood took off when its founder, Joshua Hogg, opened a gristmill on White Rocks Creek in 1836 which became one of the most important flour mills in Jackson County because it produced high quality flour available only at that time. The mill closed around 1907 but reopened briefly in 1912 before closing again for good that year due to financial troubles brought about by World War I interrupted production by then-owner Samuel Curtis Boothe Jr.. In 1925 local banker/ politician Alvin Cramer donated land east of Springdale Road for use as a racially segregated public housing project called Brownell Homes located adjacent to current day demolished High school which served as both school and housing until 1969 when it was replaced with nearby Masonic Temple Park where today’s elementary school (grades pre-K - 8) are located while large park sits across street from City Hall building which served as community center during its heyday (1920s - 1940s) until it burned down in 1973 . In 1986 this site became known as "Cramer Park" after local banker/politician Alvin Cramer who contributed much to development there . Today Crescent Heights Apartments sit across street from City Hall building serving mostly professional or business tenants while smaller park remains across street from original caseroom used by city officials .
