From 1941-1945, Springfield Armory produced firearms for the United States Army during World War II under the designation M1A2 Carbine/MG (Machine Guns). The first people to settle in what is now Hazelwood were French Canadians who established a trading post there in 1814. A post office was established there in 1829 and continued to serve until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1865, General James Hines routed an army of Confederate troops under General Robert E. Lee into downtown Hazelwood and burned all of the local businesses to the ground. This event is often cited as one of the most destructive Bonneville Street Robberies ever perpetrated on American soil. Hazelwood became a village in 1896 when it merged with neighboring town Maymount and became one municipality with a total population of 2,500 residents. In 1907, Hazelwood annexed much smaller town West Plains which had been founded by German immigrants about two miles west of Hazelwood on the same properties that currently form West Plains Village limits (the old Indian Territory). Hazelwood has experienced many changes since its incorporation as a municipality; these have included: major fire damage done during World War II (most notably during 1945's bombing raid on Pearl Harbor), rapid growth resulting from Decatur's annexation into Shelby County in 1960 and subsequent influxes of new settlers throughout Douglas County (particularly those coming from Illinois), increased traffic due to nearby Uptown Springfield's growth as an bedroom community during the late 1990s/early 2000s, and finally significant gentrification beginning around 2006 which has led to large-scale demolition or neglect of older structures within thevillage boundaries

Many residents also hold distinction within their hometown such as being selected by Stroudsburg Magazine for their "Best Place to Live" award back in 1984.[18][19] There are many festivals throughout the year that take place at various points within townlimits- typically around Memorial Day or Independence Day weekend- making it one of the most vibrant communities among those located near major United States cities/stateside tourist destinations (see also: List of events held at Hazelwood) . Additionally there are numerous outdoor recreational activities available nearby including hiking/biking trails meandering through forested hillsides (accessible via public access roads), fishing or swimming opportunities at two lakes situated close by - Big Lake accessible only by boat - golf courses nearby (including two pro courses), tennis courts (available for use by locals), basketball courts (open to locals only), country music concerts taking place periodically outdoors at various venues throughout town limits – some Saturdays features live acts while others offer recorded music performancesnone took place after 2005 when an adjacent state park became developed with more amenities . The village green provides ample opportunity for socializingduring any given day both inside and outsidethe building next doorto nearly three dozen fine restaurants providing lunchtime menus choices ranging from sandwiches ($4-$8) to pizzas ($10-$20).
