In 1863, the town became part of Springfield and was renamed after President Abraham Lincoln's health secretary, Salmon P. Chase. After years of growth and development, Hazelwood experienced its first natural disaster when a severe windstorm swept through the area on October 15th 1888 which destroyed many homes and businesses including most of the town's taverns and grocery stores. The community has seen continued growth throughout its history with an increase in population to over 10,000 by 2000. Today, Hazelwood is home to several churches including First Baptist Church (founded in 1901), Methodist Episcopal Church (founded in 1907), Presbyterianism (established in 1906), Lutheranism (established in 1912) and African American churches such as Ebenezer Baptist church (born Augustus Smith; founder) and Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church (based at 902 N Main Street). During much of its early history Hazelwood relied heavily upon slave labor for both farming activities and manufacturing however following emancipation there began a gradual shift towards more self-reliant lifestyles with increased reliance upon local resources instead of imported goods. This has led to some unique aspects of Hazelwood culture that have retained popularity over time such as their strong sense of community identity or "village meeting" style civil government where citizens meet regularly to discuss matters pertaining to their village or township even if they live miles away from it. Many residents still keep traditional farm implements such as hoes, spades and tractors around their houses while also owning additional automobiles or motorcycles for transportation within their village limits which can be seen during summertime when villagers gather at numerous public events indoors or outdoors across popular local beach locations like Big Sandy Lake or Park Pond Lake near downtown Springfield for swimming/fishing/horseback riding opportunities etc..
