Hazelwood, Missouri is a town in Webster County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City Metro Area. The first post office in Hazelwood was established on February 28, 1868. The present post office building was built in 1907. Hazelwood was named for General John A. Hazelwood (1827-1909), a commander in the Union army during the American Civil War and one of the most decorated officers of that conflict. Hazelwood had been surveyed by James Kiefer in 1857 and given to Webster County as part of an area ceded to it by Kansas Territory after the admission of that state into the Union as a free state on November 4, 1861. The site for what would become Hazelwood had been used originally for farming and stock grazing before it became known as a community because of its location near two wooded hills which protected it from Indian attack. In 1881, William Hinton donated land to build a school house and other buildings on what would later be called Elm Street in honor of his late wife Sarah Hinton (1831-1911). Mrs. Hinton's parents were Driskill and Eliza Hepburn Ewing and she married William Hinton when she was eighteen years old—the same year her father died at age seventy-four from pneumonia caused by eating contaminated meat from an animal he had caught while hunting with frontier traders.—William Hinton being then twenty-one years old and Sarah sophomore at Central High School.—The first school building was dedicated on October 9th, 1881.—It served grades one through twelve untilgrades thirteen through fifteen were added in 1915 when Central High School moved to nearby Waverly Heights.—Mrs. Hinton gave her gift to Webster County free of charge.—After Mrs. Hinton's death in 1911 her husband continued giving money annually until his death in 1939; thereafter gifts stopped.—In 1930 Mr. & Mrs.(widowed)Emma(Laughlin)Fenton started giving money annually until their deaths also; thereafter donations stopped.—From 1930 through 1964 there were only yearly gifts; thereafter there has been no giftgiving since 1965.—Today all students are educated through local public schools.; In 2006–2007 Community Foundation purchased property across Elm Street from current elementary school building which will house continuation high school thru 12th grade along with special needs/ gifted program within walking distance
