Hazelwood is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Hazelwood is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. It is bordered by Prospect Heights to the north and east, Independence to the south and west, and Overland Park to the northwest. The town was founded in 1855 on a donated tract of land from Hugh McCulloch. The first post office was established in 1857, and the first store opened in 1865. In 1870, a sawmill was built on the site of present-day Hazelwood Elementary School; this mill continued operation until it shut down in 1975. Hazelwood also had a dairy until 1954 when it closed due to competition from more efficient milk production facilities in nearby towns such as Overland Park and Kansas City. The community began rapid growth following World War II; by 1950 there were over 150 businesses operating in Hazelwood. Some of these businesses included an auto dealership, a grocery store/cafeteria combo shop/diner, two banks (the original building still stands as one of several local landmarks), four schools (two elementary schools and two high school), three churches (one Baptist and one Methodist), nine businesses that manufacturing companies used as their plants (six general stores/depots, five meatpacking plants/processing plants], twelve residences (nine single family homes and seven multifamily dwellings)], four medical offices]], seventeen hotels [/=] ], sixteen agricultural lands [/=] ], thirteen water systems[/=] ]]. As Hazelwood grew older some residents relocated out of state or into other communities within Missouri; however most residents kept close ties with their hometown through social activities such as sports teams or dances around Christmas time. In 2006-2007 there were plans for an addition to one of local high school's walls which would have been home to both music classrooms for use during special events like graduationuations or plays[?]; however no action has been taken since then given statements made by both High School Principal [Tommy] Rankin[]and Mayor Tom Clancy [] about concerns about how adding more room would impact locker rooms adjacent to Girls basketball courts]. On July 7th 2007,[?], voters passed an ordinance increasing property taxes assessed against properties located within ½ mile outside city limits.[?]. This increase will provide money towards expanding meetinghouses which are needed due to overcrowding at current locations[?] .

Hazelwood is a small town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first recorded mention of Hazelwood was in 1835 when it was called "Hazel Grove". In 1853, the town name was changed to "Hazelwood" after a local tree. The first post office was established in Hazelwood on October 10, 1854. By 1860, the population had increased to 434 residents. In 1861, Confederate General John C. Fremont arrived in Missouri and Battle Creek opened up for business as an armory because Union forces could not operate near there due to Confederate artillery fire from nearby Harper's Ferry. After Fremont's army left for Illinois early that year, Battle Creek became an important military depot and center of trade for Hazelwood settlers until 1865 when it closed down due to war-time restrictions on commerce with St Louis (see also: First Kansas War). In 1865-1866, one hundred black slaves were imported into Hazelwood by their owner Jens Anderholm from Arkadelphia Arkansas as part of his plan to start a new slave colony in Johnson County which he named "Baldwinville". When the war ended and slavery was abolished throughout the United States, these slaves were freed but some returned home where they settled near Arkadelphia before eventually moving on to other parts of America. In 1892-1893 two brothers named Harry and Sidney Levy built a sawmill on Logansport Road east of town while still living at home with their parents who had helped them build it; this mill operated until 1903 when Sidney died suddenly leaving Harry running the mill alone until 1924 when Harry bought out Sidney's share and continued operations as known today as Harry & Sidney Levy Sawmills Incorporated (HSL). It is notable that HSL began production just months before President Grover Cleveland made his famous speech recognizing white Americans who owned land within Indian Territory which included much of present-day Missouri including what is now Hazelwood. This event helped set off what would become known as the Great Plains Land Rush which led directly to development around Hazelwood over time culminating with its incorporation into Johnson County on November 3rd 1920 through an act by then Governor James Fenton Hughes under pressure from cattle ranchers angry about being left out of any larger land settlement intended for them during World War I .
