Since the early 1800s, Hazelwood, Missouri has been a center for ammunition production. The town was founded in 1848 by fur traders and their families as a trading post on the confluence of the Verdigris and Arkansas Rivers. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia and Hazelwood became an engine of munitions production. Ammunition production continued until World War II when it decreased due to rationing. Today, Hazelwood is home to two small businesses that produce ammunition products for local customers. Ammunition Production in Hazelwood began with musketry rounds made from soft lead shot taken from animals killed for food. By 1860, cannonballs had become available and lead balls were developed for artillery use. Flintlock pistols were produced during the American Revolution and soon after they were replaced by rifled firearms such as breech-loading cannons. Rifling allowed projectiles to be fired more quickly with less accuracy than smoothbore firearms which caused them to become more popular among artillery crew members during the Revolutionary War. In 1849, Jesse James was captured by Unionists near Springfield, Illinois; his ill-fated group of raiders was eventually pardoned by Ulysses S Grant following his surrender at Appomattox Court House in 1865 Jesse James' capture allowed new rifle manufacturers including Winchester Company (founded 1795) and Colt Company (founded 1855) access to high quality rifles used by Confederate General Robert E. Lee during the Civil War Although cannonball ammo became available in 1868 when ordnance manufacturer Smith & Wesson introduced a new round designed specifically for artillery use called "Bolivian", this type of ammo was not typically reloaded because it required firing several times per cartridge before becoming effective

Hazelwood is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area and is the second most populous city in that area after Kansas City. A post office began serving the town on July 1, 1840, under the name of Poplar Bluff. The name change was due to objections by a neighboring community which had been called “Hickory Grove” for many years before that. When one railway line reached Hazelwood it became an important transportation center with several mills and churches being built here along with large factories such as Joplin's Kinney & Wurster Railroad Company and Armour's Lumber Company. The Panic of 1893 destroyed much of these businesses and by 1902 Hazelwood had only 5 businesses remaining including three small stores and one hotel/motel which still stands today known as the Gazelle Motel. In 1957, when St. Francois County became a part of Mo., HazelWOOD annexed into MOFFTOWN which then merged intoKansasCityMSA

In 1868, the Ulysses S Grant Administration proposed annexing Saint Francois Parish to Arkansas because Arkansas wanted an outlet into Indian Territory (the Northwest Territories). The proposal met with opposition from many Virginians because they felt their congressional representation should be given to residents east of the Mississippi River instead of west of it; this proposal called forSaint François Parish residents east of the river "to go down in flames." Hazelwood experienced its first tornado on October 12th 1886 when a category F3 tornado touched down just north-east of town center injuring 14 people and causing numerous damage indexes including $1 million worth total destroyed or damaged property

Hazelwood was founded in 1836 by the Hazelwood family. The first post office in the area was established in 1839. The town grew rapidly, and by 1860 there were over 100 residents. In 1868, the town erected a schoolhouse and began to offer public transportation to its citizens. In 1872, Hazelwood became a city, and it officially became an incorporated village in 1886. By 1912, the population of Hazelwood had reached 1,500 people. In 1951, Hazelwood merged with neighboring towns of White City and Florissant to form the city of Florissant.
