In 1892, a man by the name of John H. Lemen became the first person to own and operate a shooting range in Hannibal, Missouri. At that time, there were no ranges open to the public in this town of just over 10,000 people. The Lemen Shooting Range was located on property that is now known as Old Ziegler Park. At its peak in 1904, the Lemen Shooting Range had a total of 46 targets available for use. Targets could be placed anywhere within 20 feet of the firing line. There were also three lanes for shooters to walk between each target and cover stations at either end of the range. During World War I, the Lemen Shooting Range was used as an air raid shelter during World War I operations in Hannibal. After hostilities ceased, the range reverted back to its original purpose as a shooting ground for local citizens and military personnel during peacetime until it closed its doors in 1951 due to vandalism by individuals outside of town. The current owner and operator of the Hannibal Shooting Range is Pinnacle Outdoor Sports which opened its business on July 1st 2017.

Hannibal was a small town in central Missouri, United States, at the time of its incorporation in 1871. The community developed around the Hannibal Lumber and Mfg. Company, which had been founded by John A. Hannibal and his brother James Hannibal in 1856. The company became one of the largest lumber companies in Missouri after it purchased land for a mill near Carthage in 1865. In 1870, Hannibal also erected a gristmill and sawmill on its own property. The Hannibal Lumber and Mfg. Company was dissolved in 1902 when its assets were sold to the Armour-Knox Paper Co., which merged with Union Carbide Corporation in 1957 to form Dow Corning Corporation. The Hannibal Mill closed down completely by 1965; all but two of the buildings have been demolished since then. In addition to its lumber industry heyday, Hannibal also experienced some heavy agricultural production during the late 19th century thanks to large holdings by local farmers such as George Wernham and Hiram Sprague Jr.. The community's biggest contribution to Iowa history may be its role as an important source of corn for that state's ethanol production program starting in the early 21st century.
