The Hannibal, Missouri, history extends back to the early 19th century. The first permanent settler in the area was Isaac H. Phillips, who established a farm on the present site of Hannibal in 1825. By 1830, there were six families living in Hannibal; four of these families were from Illinois and two from Pennsylvania. In 1835, a group of farmers from Illinois organized the Hannibal Agricultural and Mechanical Society to improve irrigation systems and raise livestock for beef and dairy production. The society's members funded a survey of the area that found good land for farming but no water supplies available for irrigation purposes. In 1840, John Fenton purchased 640 acres of land near Carthage; this would be his eventual plantation which he called "Fenton's Cave." In 1851, Elijah Prentice acquired 1,000 acres north of town along the Hi-Line railroad. This would be his future plantation which he called "Prentice's Landing". On December 6th, 1862, Union General Patrick Jumper burned down Prentice's plantation after learning that it had not been properly registered with the army as required by law. This destroyed much crop potential in what is now Carthage County and left Prentice with few options other than to sell his property to pay off his debt or leave the county altogether. In 1865-1866 Confederate General Jubal Early invaded Missouri during its war with Confederate States of America (CSA). Aftermath of this invasion led to an increase in slave trade within Missouri because many slaves abandoned their plantations in search of new opportunities elsewhere. Consequently, many years later when Union troops invaded Corinth County following up on Early’s Invasion into Missouri (1870), they discovered large numbers of slaves living unrestrained on various plantations throughout southern Illinois including Hannibal County properties that had once belonged to Confederates!
