Hannibal is a small town in Hancock County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. Hannibal is part of the Springfield-Springfield-Branson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hannibal is named after François de la Rochefoucauld, a French statesman and author who lived in the area during the 18th century. The first white settlers in Hannibal were Temperance Hamilton and her husband Daniel Boone. They built a cabin on the banks of the Niobrara River in 1799. In 1812, James Kapp made his home near what is now Hannibal on land owned by his uncle John Randolph of Hampshire County. In 1819, Randolph donated land to the state of Missouri for educational purposes and named it after him – Hannibal University Park. The city was founded on April 14, 1836 by Andrew Jourdan as a spot for trading goods with Indian nations living east of the Mississippi River. Hannibal's first store was opened by Wm. Treadwell in 1840. In 1861, when Confederate General Robert E Lee came through central Missouri to survey new battlefields along his march from Kentucky to Virginia City (in present-day Jefferson County), he headquarters were located at Carthage Hall which still stands as a historic landmark today within walking distance of both Hannibal University Park and downtown Springfield: "After he had inspected all around this place," wrote one historian about that visit "he ordered his staff officers ... to take possession of every house they could find." The next year saw another significant development when Hannibal became an election precinct; voting began there on November 8th, 1861 under provisions organizing Missouri's then two congressional districts into one electoral district resulting in Lincoln being elected President on November 6th despite having only received 36% of the popular vote statewide! A post office called Carthage (still extant) was established at this time and continued serving until 1907...In 1870 Union Colonel George Armstrong Custer came through centralMO on his way southward via Independence Lake & encountered some Confederates skirmishing near Carthage Hall...A large force led by General Custer engaged them & drove them off; so great was their excitement over this event that not even cannonballs could be fired without causing damage...The largest ever Tory riot took place here early last year - nearly 400 people--men women & children--disperse thro' streets Erratic firefights ensued lasting several hours before finally subsiding & all excepting perhaps 25 or 30 got away safe." So much for history being dry! "Hannibal" means "place where horses are reared"; according to one source it may also have been derived from Hennepin County (Minnesota), where many pioneers had come from earlier that decade looking for land west of the Mississippi River following gold discoveries there: "This story goes back to1850 when Pierre Dorion built himself a cabin about three miles outside present day Independence . He named it Hennepin Hills afterMinnesota’s Hennepin county."
