Hannibal is a town in Randolph County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,041 at the 2010 census. Hannibal was founded in 1836 by John A. Hannibal and his brother-in-law George W. Marshall. The first post office in Hannibal was established on December 12, 1836. In 1861, it became the county seat of Randolph County after the state of Missouri moved from St. Louis to this location. The county courthouse was built in 1875 and remains extant today as part of the downtown district of Hannibal. Hannibal is located at (38.859327, -92.622885). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.711 square miles (1.953 km²), all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,021 people residing in the town limits: 905 men and 553 women; 1 black man and 2 white women; 3 Native American Indians; 1 person who self-identified as being Spanish American; and 10uda other ancestry groups totaling 8 individuals or 2% of its population according to UAC data available as of 2000[2]. As reported in 2006 by Randall Melson for KSHB TV9 News,[3] there may be more Mexican immigrants living within Hannibal's limits undetected because they are not required to report their immigration status like others citizens do for public record purposes
Hannibal, MO was founded in 1870 by James W. Atkins and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for Hannibal, a Carthaginian general who helped lead the Roman army against the Greek city of Syracuse. The Atkinses were early settlers in the area and built the first home in what is now Hannibal. They also operated a farm and later a store. In 1875, Hannibal absorbed part of neighboring Poplar Bluff into its population. By 1907, Hannibal had a population of about 350 people. In that year, the town erected a Carnegie library and organized an election to rename its high school after William Howard Taft, president of the United States from 1909 to 1913.
