Hannibal, Mo. is a small town located in Union County, Missouri, about 20 miles west of Springfield. Hannibal was founded in 1821 by Jacob and Anna Hickson, who named it for Hannibals Creek which ran through their farm. The first post office was established in1825 and the town had its first white settler in 1827. By 1830, Hannibal had a population of 50 residents and by 1840 it hadgrown to 100 residents. In 1851, Hannibal became the site of the Territorial Congress meeting where the Organic Act of Missouri was passed. In 1861, Hannibal saw its most significant event when Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army marched through the community during his march from Cairo to Springfield to battle against Union Army General John Custer at Battle Of Missionary Ridge near Carthage Springs. In 1865, Hannibal saw another significant event when President Abraham Lincoln called for an all-out war with Confederate States of America (CSA). The townspeople responded by setting up barricades around their homes on Main Street in support of the Union cause. After three days of skirmishes and several nights of artillery fire, Confederate forces were routed at White Sands Hill outside Carthage Springs and Hannibal experienced its darkest hour ever as Union soldiers burned down many homes and businesses including the Hicksons' home which still stands today as a museum piece known locally as "the ghost town". After Three years of戦争 cost over 300 lives including much property damage & loss of life within Hannibal there was finally peace dividends brought about by Abraham Lincoln’s Executive Order 9 New Year’s Day 1865 ordering all troops must return home no matter what their state or regimental assignments were...thus endangering but not ending forever this bloodiest conflict on American soil
